This book is the best!

If you are serious about learning to play the harp, this is the book for you! Tim has an amazing way of explaining technique and theory. He starts with the basics to give you a solid foundation upon which to build your skills. As I've gone along, I've basically memorized every chapter. I was looking for a teaching method that would help me grow and develop as a new harp player. This fits the bill perfectly. If you live in the Boston area, you should also check Tim out as a teacher. I would put him right up there with any of the musicians I studied with at Berklee! He's a great player and teacher.

Buy this book to sound good around the camp fire and impress your friends.

I was self taught for many years on the harmonica and could do the basics with the instrument around a camp fire with my friends. I wanted to do more with the harp but I did not know how to read music. I needed help and it was difficult to find harmonica instructors for lessons. I found this book to be one of the best written on the subject, since it takes you from the basics all the way to advanced topics and techniques. Tim has many samples in the book and he follows them up with mp3 files online so that you can practice from the book and also from listening to Tim play the exercises. Tim writes from the perspective of the student who wants to learn how to play the harp. I did not give up or become frustrated as I worked through this book from beginning to end. I recommend this book and if you work through the lessons, you will be playing blues and country songs before too long and maybe even go to a blues jam session to test out your new found skills. Enjoy your musical journey with this well written book. Dave

Absolutely the best harmonica instruction

After years of trying to fake it and failing miserably, I picked up The Talking Harmonica to learn how to play the harp for real. With Tim Gartland's clear and simple explaination of the proper techniques, I was very quickly able to play melodies more smoothly and actually bend notes to places I didn't think possible on a little Marine Band Harp. All of that, of course, is just a prelude to approaching the more bluesy attributes of this incredibly versatile instrument. As the title implies, this great instructional guide truly gives you the tools to find your own voice on the harmonica.
