All new and original to this volume, the 21 stories in Dangerous Women include work by twelve New York Times bestsellers, and seven stories set in the authors' bestselling continuities-including a new "Outlander" story by Diana Gabaldon, a tale of Harry Dresden's world by Jim Butcher, a story from Lev Grossman set in the world of The Magicians, and a 35,000-word novella by George R. R. Martin about the Dance of the Dragons, the vast civil war that tore Westeros apart nearly two centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones.

Also included are original stories of dangerous women--heroines and villains alike--by Brandon Sanderson, Joe Abercrombie, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Lawrence Block, Carrie Vaughn, S. M. Stirling, Sharon Kay Penman, and many others.

Writes Gardner Dozois in his Introduction, "Here you'll find no hapless victims who stand by whimpering in dread while the male hero fights the monster or clashes swords with the villain, and if you want to tie these women to the railroad tracks, you'll find you have a real fight on your hands. Instead, you will find sword-wielding women warriors, intrepid women fighter pilots and far-ranging spacewomen, deadly female serial killers, formidable female superheroes, sly and seductive femmes fatale, female wizards, hard-living Bad Girls, female bandits and rebels, embattled survivors in Post-Apocalyptic futures, female Private Investigators, stern female hanging judges, haughty queens who rule nations and whose jealousies and ambitions send thousands to grisly deaths, daring dragonriders, and many more."

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of the Month, December 2013: The sci-fi and fantasy genre is known for going big: epic series, massive tomes, epic series comprised of massive tomes. And even here, short stories--21 original tales in total--combine to form a tremendous 800-page genre-crossing collection. Co-editor George R.R. Martin contributes a story set in Westeros, nearly 200 years before A Game of Thrones begins. Likewise, other authors offer glimpses into their signature worlds. Jim Butcher gives the Dresden Files a twist by focusing on his protagonist's assistant. Lev Grossman hones in on a group of girls at the wizarding school that's central to The Magicians. Diana Gabaldon, Brandon Sanderson, Megan Lindholm... A range of fantastic writers, both male and female, offer an equally exciting range of ways to talk about "Dangerous Women"--from an unlikely bounty hunter to a gunslinger, a mother accused of the unthinkable to a young princess on the run. Dangerous Women is perfect for clamoring fans, as well as new readers, who may find these bite-sized stories an undaunting way to get to know new authors. --Robin A. Rothman

From Booklist
Dangerous women of all kinds—warriors, fighter pilots, queens, wizards, PIs, and more—are the subject of this cross-genre anthology, curated by experienced editors Martin and Dozois. Several high-profile authors set stories in the worlds of their best-selling series. Molly, Harry Dresden’s smart-talking, long-suffering apprentice, narrates Jim Butcher’s urban-fantasy detective story “Bombshells.” Lev Grossman’s wry tale follows a young wizard-in-training as her innocent prank against a fellow Brakebills student misfires in “The Girl in the Mirror.” Martin’s prequel story is set in Westeros centuries before A Game of Thrones, while Diana Gabaldon’s follows a young Jaime Fraser before the start of the Outlander series. Other tales range from hard-bitten western (Joe Abercrombie’s “Some Desperado”) to bleak dystopia (Nancy Kress’ “Second Arabesque, Very Slowly”) to historical drama (Sharon Kay Penman’s “A Queen in Exile”). Some tales defy classification, such as Megan Lindholm’s poignant but fierce story of aging and discovering new life in the fringes. With 21 stories of this caliber, readers will be sure to find several favorites. --Krista Hutley

One of the best anthologies I've ever read.
By Kriti Godey
I was really excited about this anthology! I love anthologies, I love kickass women, and the Martin-Dozois anthologies attract the best fantasy writers. I've read and liked one of their anthologies (Songs of Love and Death: All Original Tales of Star Crossed Love) before, but this one blew it out of the park!

Dangerous Women doesn't just feature sci-fi/fantasy stories; there are a variety of genres represented. This makes the collection have an incredibly broad range. The eponymous dangerous women are all pretty different too - physically or magically powerful women, women who flourish despite their circumstances, femme fatales, vengeful ghosts, and more. Sometimes they drive the plot, sometimes they're the protagonist, and sometimes they're both.

I enjoyed some stories more than others, but unusually, I didn't think any fell flat. Some were disturbing or implausible, but I think they still made good additions to the anthology. I'm not going to review every story, but I'll talk a bit about some standouts.

THE HANDS THAT ARE NOT THERE by Melinda Snodgrass

This story takes place in the same universe as one of my favourites from Songs of Love and Death, and I was immediately pulled into this universe again. Unfortunately there aren't any full-length books in this universe, but I'm hoping there will be soon! It involves an extraordinary story told in a bar, which if were true, would have incredible repercussions.

SHADOWS FOR SILENCE IN THE FORESTS OF HELL by Brandon Sanderson

I don't really like the title of the story, but the story itself was fantastic. It's set in Sanderson's Cosmere (although I don't know what planet) and features a terrifying world and a resourceful woman who makes it a little safer. I'm probably biased by my indefatigable love for Sanderson, but I loved this story.

BOMBSHELLS by Jim Butcher

I've only read the first book of the Dresden Files, but this story made me really want to catch up with it (it also contains major spoilers for the direction of the series, but I didn't mind that). It features Molly, Harry Dresden's apprentice and some other Dresdenverse women on a mission. Molly gets some great character development, and there's a lot of gratuitous ass-kicking. Some of it was a little cliched, but it was so much fun that I didn't mind.

A QUEEN IN EXILE by Sharon Kay Penman and NORA'S SONG by Cecelia Holland

Both of these stories were historical fiction and featured women figuring out how to become dangerous in a male-dominated world. Other than that, they were fairly different - in the former, Constance, future Queen of Sicily, takes charge of her unhappy life and in the latter, a young Eleanor of England, Queen of Castile learns how to get her way. I found both fascinating, and I really need to read more historical fiction.

MY HEART IS EITHER BROKEN by Megan Abbott

I don't want to say very much about this heartbreaking story, but it examines the emotional consequences of knowing a truly dangerous woman. Or thinking you do.

LIES MY MOTHER TOLD ME by Caroline Spector

This story is set in the shared Wild Cards universe, and involves a superhero that goes from having dangerous powers to being truly dangerous even without her powers. I found it very poignant.

--

I could keep going, but I'll just say that I also loved SOME DESPERADO by Joe Abercrombie (I can't wait to see more of Shy in his latest book, Red Country), THE GIRL IN THE MIRROR by Lev Grossman, NAME THE BEAST by Sam Sykes, and RAISA STEPANOVA by Carrie Vaughn (I haven't read anything by Vaughn that I haven't loved). THE PRINCESS AND THE QUEEN by George R.R. Martin read like the dry medieval telling that it was meant to be, but was strangely fascinating.

The stories I wasn't as thrilled about:

I KNOW HOW TO PICK 'EM by Lawrence Block

This is an extremely well-written story, but it left me feeling unclean just having read it (which seems intentional). It definitely adds to the diversity of the anthology, but I wish I hadn't read it. It probably didn't help that I was envisioning Tricia Helfer as the "dangerous woman" in the story.

SECOND ARABESQUE, VERY SLOWLY by Nancy Krees

The idea behind this story was fascinating (discovering beauty in an ugly world), and I was somewhat touched by the ending, but I was distracted by finding the worldbuilding implausible - 99% of women are sterile, and civilisation totally breaks down. I can see how women's place in society would change significantly, but I don't think cities and technology would be completely destroyed. I didn't even mind the world, but the cause of it seemed forced.

PRONOUNCING DOOM by S.M. Stirling

I got the gist of this story, but was thoroughly confused by the world. American society is now heavily influenced by ancient Scottish/Irish tradition, and this all happens within a few years? I found out that this is set in the "Emberverse", but I don't think there's enough of an introduction to this universe for people not already familiar with it.

--

That ended up being much longer than I anticipated. Summary: this is one of the best anthologies I've ever read. Buy it!

A great collection!
By bdallmann
I don't like reading short stories. I feel like they don't have enough time for proper character development and, more often than not, they feel awkwardly truncated. Short story collections are difficult for me to sit down and read for a long time because my brain keeps being confused when I move on to the next story. But that's the reality of short story collections, huh?

Anyway, this collection is better than those I have read before. I sincerely enjoyed each and every story in the book, though of course I liked some more than others. There were several that I wished were full-length novels (Carrie Vaughn's "Raisa Stepanova," for example). I had a few friends who were misled by the title, thinking it referred solely to women that are out to wreak havoc and destroy lives. That is certainly not what this collection is about. While some of the female protagonists may not be shining stars of virtue, for the most part they all represent strong woman who take control of their destinies. It is, truthfully, a book of feminist dreams (and I mean that in the best way possible).

A friend did express concern that the book would use George R.R. Martin's name as a way to sell a collection of mediocre stories. However, I found that is not the case. I came to the collection without bias, as I have not read anything by any of the authors (no, I do not read the Song of Ice and Fire series), yet I found each story to be well-written and original. I just hope that not too many people flip to the end of the book to read Martin's story and then decide not to read the others. It would be a damn shame, since I was not impressed with his work.

Is the book worth $32.50? Personally, I would not think of paying full price for it. However, as stated before, I am not typically a fan of short stories. I think it is a worthy addition to the book collections of those who do enjoy short stories, or for those who are fans of one or more of the contributing authors.

Uneven - And Title Somewhat Misleading
By bonnie_blu
Very uneven collection. Although there were a few excellent tales (e.g., those from Jim Butcher, Joe Abercrombie, Raisa Stepanova, and others), there were too many in which women were little more than backdrops and the tales were really all about men. A collection entitled "Dangerous Women" should have had women as the main characters. I love works by George R.R. Martin and expected more from him in picking the stories for this collection.

A yummy mystery!

I read this book, which I long ago lost after loaning it to a friend, and saw the associated film many years ago and just adored both. I tried and failed to get it an e-book version of it but having a hardcopy is just fine. The plot is amusing and suspenseful. If you enjoy light amusing mysteries and reading about good food, then this might just be up your alley!

Novel & Movies Difference
By Christopher
I'm a huge fan of the movie Who's Killing the Great Chefs of Europe? which is a mystery/comedy starring George Segal, Jacquline Bisset, and Robert Morely and knew what the story was, but like most movies based off novels Hollywood again didnt get it right. There was a number of changes and quiet a few EYE-OPENERS for me. I dont want to give away any spoilers and the plots are basically the same, but seeing 1 thing in a 1978 comic mystery and reading it in the novel is completly different. I refer to the fashion of how the first 2 chefs are killed. If you have questions let me know but I'll say this if you enjoy a good murder mystery/suspense w/ comedy pieces and fully developed characters and enjoy fine cusine I'd recomend this one.

a quick-witted 1976 comic novel
By Neurasthenic
Most people probably know this book as the basis for the 1978 movie "Who is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe?" Indeed, the movie borrows the premise of the book and most of the characters, and much of the funny repartee, especially from the corpulent food critic Achille van Golk (called "Max" in the movie, and memorably played by Robert Morley). However, the movie changes the ending and eliminates a lot of the sexier material in the book, so even if you are familiar with the one, there is still reason to try the other.

Patricia Highsmith: Selected Novels and Short Stories, by Patricia Highsmith

"Patricia Highsmith's novels are peerlessly disturbing . . . bad dreams that keep us thrashing for the rest of the night."―The New Yorker

The remarkable renaissance of Patricia Highsmith continues with the publication of Patricia Highsmith: Selected Novels and Short Stories, featuring two groundbreaking novels as well as a trove of penetrating short stories. With a critical introduction by Joan Schenkar, situating Highsmith's classic works within her own tumultuous life, this book provides a useful guide to some of her most dazzlingly seductive writing. Strangers on a Train (1950), transformed into a legendary film by Alfred Hitchcock, displays Highsmith's genius for psychological characterization and tortuous suspense, while The Price of Salt (1952), with its lesbian lovers and a creepy PI, provides a thrilling and highly controversial depiction of "the love that dare not speak its name." Patricia Highsmith: Selected Novels and Short Stories firmly establishes Highsmith's centrality to American culture by presenting key works that went on to influence a half-century of literature and film. Abandoned by the wider reading public in her lifetime, Highsmith finally gets the canonical recognition that is her due.

Review
“Starred Review. The short stories range in tone from the truly unsettling (“A Mighty Nice Man”; “Oona, the Jolly Cave Woman”) to the biting (“The Baby Spoon”; “Not One of Us”). While Highsmith may be best known for The Talented Mr. Ripley, this collection is proof positive that her savagely sedate prose expands far beyond her hero-villain Tom Ripley.” (Publishers Weekly)

From AudioFile
Mystery writer Patricia Highsmith was known by her fans for her understated yet disturbing prose. In this collection of selected stories and novels, which excludes her most well-known work, THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY, the listener is led down Highsmith's garden path to encounter wondrously pretty plots flowering as poisonous flytraps. Cassandra Campbell ably disguises what's coming with affable interpretations of character, while Bronson Pinchot subtly steers each turn of discovery. THE PRICE OF SALT is read by Campbell, and STRANGERS ON A TRAIN by Pinchot. They split the shorter stories between them, such as the evocative "A Mighty Nice Man." Both narrators succeed in playing Highsmith's elegant game, making even the lesser-known stories a masterful garden of delights. J.L. Great collection
By Kindle Customer
I listened to the audio version of this via audible.com, and I have to say that it sort of permeated my experiences for the 27 hours that I listened to it over a month or so. My interest was piqued by the opportunity to read "Strangers on a Train", having seen the Hitchcock film many times. The collection starts out there, and continues through short stories, some of which I thought were really surprising, observant and human. "The Price of Salt", the other novel in the collection, I felt really was the highlight. PH's writing is so detailed in its description, I felt like I was experiencing the world of 1952 along with the characters. It must have been very important for gay and lesbian readers almost 60 years ago to read such a truthful and sweet story of two women in love. I hadn't expected to find "sweetness" in PH's work.

PH deserves to be read, and I plan on doing much more of that.

The readers on the collection are excellent.

A Very Enjoyable "Must Read"
By Hank's Wife
Quality writing propels the reader forward, and that describes Patricia Highsmith's style perfectly. None of the current fad of slap-dash writing and throwing in a word that sends us to the dictionary (and discovering another word would have been more appropriate anyway): not impressed - rather, very depressed. We all think we know "Strangers On a Train" from the Alfred Hitchcock movie, but the story as written is much more compelling with a darkness not depicted in the film. [After reading the Ripley novels (not included), both movies of "The Talented Mr. Ripley" (the French "Purple Noon" and the Matt Damon movie) are unsatisfying. On the other hand, John Malkovich and the screenwriters of "Ripley's Game" revealed the Ripley character's appreciation of music and art, his devotion to his wife, his cunning and devious "business" ventures, and his dark dark aspect.] The "Price of Salt" is a wonderfully moving book, and the short stories are of very high quality and a joy to read (with two minor quibbles). She is an author educated English speakers/readers should add to their "Must Read" list.

Can't Believe I Took So Long to Read Her!
By Lynn Ellingwood
This is an amazing collection of short stories and two novels by Patricia Highsmith. She became popular again when her novel The Talented Mr. Ripley was made into a movie starring Matt Damon a few years ago. I prefer the French film version of the same novel under the title Purple Noon personally. I think it is one of the great French New Wave films. Anyway, this collection came out soon after the release of the most recent movie version of that novel. The first novel Patricia Highsmith published is Strangers on a Train which of course was made into the masterpiece movie by Alfred Hitchcock. There are minor differences between the film and the novel in the beginning, Guy is an architect in the novel, a profession tennis player in the movie but the differences become major and veer off from each other in the middle of the book. Film was censored much more harshly than books were at the time and there are behavioral nuances that Hitchcock could tell easily one way in film and better told another way in the novel. Both have an interesting way of dealing with the homosexual stance of George Bruno, Hitchcock used George Sanders to "act" gay while Highsmith describes Bruno as feeling anger and displeasure around women except for his mother. He also has an attachment to Guy which is shown in both mediums as being unusual. The novel takes us into a more logical outcome of the horrific story.
Highsmith was also a gifted short story teller with stories that could take your breath away. The book breaks up the stories into her early career as a writer and later in her career. The early stories are A Mighty Nice Man, in which a man traveling through a small town wants to take a young teenage girl for a ride in his car without anyone knowing about it; The Still Point of the Turning World; Quiet NIght; Where the Door is Open and the Welcome Mat is Always Out; In The Plaza, where a young boy in a tourist town in Mexico grows up to be a gigolo to earn money and succeeds all too well; The Great Cardhouse; and a real mind blower, The Baby Spoon.
The Price of Salt is the second novel in the book and it is wonderful. A simple story of two women who fall in love at a time where there really isn't a description of their kind of love and the threat of consequences in America, land of the free. Basically a romantic love story where the protagonists are women and the evil stepsisters are men.
The later stories include: Oona, the Jolly Cavewoman, a story as silly as it sounds; Two Disagreeable Pigeons, about a couple of pigeons who are used to each other even if they aren't madly in love with each other, traversing the tube, buses and transportation daily to find their food and activities; Not One of Us, a deeply disturbing portrait of a social group who include and exclude a couple they "don't like" because they don't drink and socialize the same way they do, very disturbing as it is true; Woodrow Wilson's Necktie, a return to a murder story; The Terror's of Basket Weaving and The Trouble with Mrs. Blynn, the Trouble with the World, a story about a woman's death. This collection is well worth reading and listening to. I listened to the audiobook version and read along at times. Wonderful collection, wonderful writer.

The tubular welded joints used in the construction of offshore structures can experience millions of variable amplitude load cycles during their service life. Such fatigue loading represents a main cause of degradation in these structures. As a result, fatigue is an important consideration in their design. Fatigue and Fracture Mechanisms of Offshore Structures present novel research and the results of wave-induced stress on the operational life of offshore structures.

Containing results of an investigation undertaken to assess the fatigue and fracture performance of steels used in the offshore industry, Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics of Offshore Structures includes,

  • Stress analysis of tubular joints
  • Fatigue design
  • Fatigue loading in Jackup structures
  • Jack-up dynamic response
  • Modelling of wave loading
  • Test specimen considerations
  • The stress intensity factor concept
  • Variable amplitude crack growth models
  • Consideration of sequence effects
  • Sea state probability model

The important research in this book will be of interest to those dealing with a wide range of engineering structures - from bridges and buildings to masts and pipelines, as well as fatigue and fracture specialists, and those concerned with materials technology.

"ME TALK PRETTY ONE DAY" IN FRENCH!

Without reading far into this book, it's easy to see that it is the French language edition of "Me Talk Pretty One Day". A few things get lost in the translation, but if you speak French, it's a great read.
