From School Library Journal
Gr 6-9–Jessica Darling is about to enter her first year at Pineville Junior High, so her college-age sister gives her a short list of guidelines to ensure her success in the seventh-grade social scene. When she arrives at school, however, Jessica quickly realizes that following the tips will be harder than she expected. Her best friend has had a makeover and attracts the attention of freshmen football players, her new classmates have outlandish and confusing methods for trying to gain popularity, and she has mistakenly been scheduled for Woodshop, which includes a class full of smart-aleck boys led by a ridiculously off-the-wall teacher. As Jessica navigates this strange new world, she inevitably finds herself in situations both amusing and awkward, and she eventually starts to accept the fact that her sister's methods for surviving junior high might not work for her. Told in the hilariously authentic voice of a preteen girl, this book will have readers laughing out loud at Jessica's high jinks, especially her disastrous stint as the school's mascot.–Sarah Reid, Broome County Public Library, Binghamton, NYα(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist
Jessica Darling, who first appeared as a high-schooler in Sloppy Firsts (2001), is back in this prequel series opener that sees her poised for the first day of seventh grade. And is she freaking out about starting Pineville Junior High? Of course. Luckily, or unluckily as it turns out, big sis Bethany provides her with a cheat sheet that’s a “Guaranteed Guide to Popularity, Prettiness, and Perfection.” These four items (get out your notepads) are as follows: “Wear something different every day”; “Make the CHEER TEAM!!!”; “Pick your first boyfriend wisely”; and “Stick with the IT clique.” This is easier said than done, as Jess becomes the cheer team mascot and finds she is not interested in any boys. On top of all that, her BFF Bridget is suddenly pretty and popular. While this doesn’t break tween ground, Jessica is a winning heroine, and as she stumbles and fumbles (and literally falls flat on her face), readers will laugh alongside her and, yes, cheer as she comes into her authentic self. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: The Jessica Darling series was a New York Times best-seller, so the prequels, backed by a solid marketing campaign, should be similarly well received. Grades 4-7. --Ann Kelley

Jessica Darling's Trademark Wit Now Takes on Middle School
By Christina (A Reader of Fictions)
As a huge fan of the original Jessica Darling series, or, at least, as huge of a fan as one can be while intentionally deciding not to finish said series, I was super curious about Megan McCafferty's prequel. I mean, more Jessica Darling is pretty much always acceptable, except for the fact that I had my reasons in stopping after two books, but that's an issue from another time. Anyway, now we can see Jessica tackle junior high, and McCafferty brings Jessica's trademark wit, observational skills and honesty to middle school.

Middle school Jessica does have a lot in common with high school Jessica, which is probably not all that surprising given that they are the same person separated by some timey-wimey stuff known as life. McCafferty does a good job making the narration similar but a bit different than that of the original series. This Jessica does come across a good deal younger. She's not got as impressive of a vocabulary, though she's starting to build it because she's discovered that her English teacher will really raise her essay grades for each thesaurus phrase substituted for a normal term. Plus, middle school Jessica is a lot more naive and less confident than high school Jessica.

By high school, Jessica Darling has pretty much comes to terms with her role in the social hierarchy and that she will never be the most popular girl in school. In middle school, Jessica's still trying to be what she's not. The series title, Jessica Darling's It List, is actually a bit misleading. In fact, this is Bethany's It List. Jessica's much older sister Bethany, in a rare instance of sisterly feeling, has decided to help Jessica avoid the curse of dorkdom by passing down the patented method for achieving popularity. Unsurprisingly, the It List does not work so well for Jessica.

See, Jessica, intelligent though she is, does not excel at pretending to be something she is not. Her half-hearted attempts end up fooling no one. Jessica's a bit of a dork and a teacher's pet, and there's no changing that. If she doesn't care about boys, she won't pretend to and she has trouble caring about her friends' woes over such things either. In fact, her biggest seventh grade fails occur when she stops being Jessica, like when she signs up for CHEER TEAM!!!, which she does not have the spirit for.

Megan McCafferty totally captures all the awkwardness of middle school. The romantic awkwardness, like how the boys chant at Bridget on the bus, like hooting like a pack of monkeys is really endearing. Or how Aleck (aka young Marcus Flutie) flirts with a "wear her down" annoyance tactic. The friendship awkwardness, which is pretty much encapsulated by Bridget becoming gorgeous just in time for seventh grade, leaving Jessica to be a normal. The middle school years especially are a time of transition where friendships come and go, and many BFFs are actually trying to climb on top of one another up the social ladder. Then there's the budding friendship between Hope and Jessica, who any readers of the original series know will be besties eventually, bonded by their judgment of everyone else's stupidity and ridiculous social rituals.

The (Totally Not) Guaranteed Guide to Popularity, Prettiness & Perfection is the middle school version of Mean Girls, I swear. I can even cast them for you. Bridget would be the obvious choice for Regina George since she's the prettiest and most popular seventh grader, but she's actually more of a Karen Smith, because she doesn't really know what's going on a lot of the time and is very easily led. Manda is the Regina. She even makes up slang (mondo) and decides when it's over. Sara, though she wants to be a queen bee, is Gretchen Wieners, a born follower, who does everything Manda says and always will, even though she resents Regina's treatment of her. Jessica's the Cady and Hope is Janis/Damian, only they could never care enough to make Jessica into the evil popular girl, and Jessica would never want Burke Roy, the Aaron Samuels figure. Also, I'm sure you all didn't need to know all of that, but, whatever, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION.

Though it's been too long for me to say with any assurance how well the occurrences here mesh with those of Sloppy Firsts, The (Totally Not) Guaranteed Guide to Popularity, Prettiness & Perfection does stand very nicely on its own. McCafferty's depiction of middle school cliques, awkwardness and romance shines with her trademark humor.

Jessica Darling is back[... kind of]!
By Amazon Customer
Thank you Megan McCafferty for reminding me who I am as a reader. I have spent the last year wrapped up in this romance with books full of all kinds of drama and debauchery. I think I kind of forgot the girl who fell in love with reading.

Don't take this as an insult to all the amazing books I've read lately. This book just reminded me of my roots in reading, and really had me thinking about the way I've been choosing books. I forgot how much I loved books that got into my heart and not my panties.

Junior High Jessica was just as funny and witty as High School/College Jessica. It was exactly like the Jessica I know and love, just a little younger.

I haven't read a middle grade book in almost ten years so I was uneasy about the middle grade label, but I had no need to be. The fact that the book was about Jessica Darling probably gave it the edge. I don't expect to be running off to the middle grade section, but I will definitely be throwing in a few MG books now and then.

It was great getting to know pre-Clueless Crew Jessica. We get more insight into how distance grew between Jessica and Bridget. We also get to meet a young Hope, though she didn't play a huge part in the book. But, most importantly, we get to meet young Marcus. Here's one thing you should know about me, Marcus Flutie is my #1 BBF forever. He was my first, and will never be able to be replaced.

The one thing that bugged me, and it didn't even really bug me, was the small exchanges between Marcus and Jessica. How could Jessica not remember these exchanges she had with Marcus? It kind of doesn't fit, but MM did a really great job with the way she had them interact. I actually went back[er... forward?] and read Sloppy Firsts, Second Helpings, and Charmed Thirds and it made me a little more open minded about the situation.

Those of us who are already well acquainted with Jessica will probably read this book waiting for certain people to show up, and by certain people I mean Marcus, but there is so much more to this book. I'm envious of all the young girls who will get a chance to grow up with Jessica from the beginning, but I hope they fall in love with the series the way I did.

Perfect for fans of the Jessica Darling series!
By Amazon Customer
The (Totally Not) Guaranteed Guide to Popularity, Prettiness & Perfection is a fabulous start to Jessica Darling's It List series. Fans of the original Jessica Darling series will love this glimpse into pre-teen Jessica's life and mind!

Jessica Darling's It List series is very much middle grade. The writing is simple, the humor is aimed for younger readers, and the characters are not very mature. However, it totally works in this case. It's set in junior high and Jessica Darling and her friends are exactly how you would expect them to be. Megan McCafferty really captured the feel of junior high with this book.

Jessica Darling is probably one of the most awkward characters I've ever read about. It's probably what makes me love her so much. She recognizes her awkwardness and while it does bother her sometimes, she embraces it most of the time. She's remarkably self-assured for a pre-teen girl. She cares very little about what everyone else thinks and worries only about what she thinks. She's a great heroine for young readers to look up to.

Her friends aren't so awesome. Bridget, Manda, Sara, and Hope are quite a crew. Bridget starts off as a nice girl but that quickly changes once she realizes how pretty she is and how she can use it to her advantage. I didn't like her at all. Manda and Sara were even worse. They considered each other friends but they were terrible to each other. And everyone else. Hope was the only one I liked and I felt like there was very little of her in the book. I look forward to learning more about her throughout the rest of the series.

The story is nothing special. It's Jessica's first year in junior high and let me tell you, she goes through some crazy stuff. There's friend troubles, boy troubles, cheer team, woodshop, and so much more. I'll just put it this way; everything that could go wrong, did. It's a quick read that definitely made me think of my own days in junior high.

Overall, The (Totally Not) Guaranteed Guide to Popularity, Prettiness & Perfection is perfect for fans of the original Jessica Darling series or for readers looking to start it. Middle grade readers should greatly enjoy this one and I definitely recommend checking it out!

Clear Introduction to Cell Biology
By Pete
This book is a very clearly written introduction to cellular biology. I would recommend it to anybody with at least a college-level Biology I understanding. The text is detailed, so for those looking for an overview of the subject, this may not be the book for you.

The book is divided into three sections:
1) Chemical and Molecular Foundations (3 chapters)
2) Genetics and Molecular Biology (5 chapters)
3) Cell Structure and Function (11 chapters)
4) Cell Growth and Development (5 chapters)

The first section is mostly a review of topics from introductory biology with additional details. For example, it briefly illustrates how a binding pocket on an enzyme works.

The second section reviews transcription, translation, overviews important lab techniques, epigenetics, and how gene expression is controlled.

The third section covers cell structure and function in detail. It covers membrane structure, organelle structure, vesicular traffic, signaling pathways, and the cell cycle (among other topics).

The final section builds on the previous sections by discussing tissues formation, stems cells, nerve cells, immunology, and cancer.

I used this book for an undergraduate Cell Biology course at a research university, and I read almost every page. It gave me exactly the foundation I needed to boost my bioinformatics research.

My take on Molecular Cell Biology Reference Book by Lodish et. al
By prema
This book was recommended by my lecturer and is used as the main reference book for eukaryotic cell biology module. I found this book was very useful and informative. It made studying this subject fun for me as I am mainly a visual learner and the book was illustrated well. The thickness of the book can be intimidating to some but it's a good book especially for those who are studying molecular cell biology.

Pure escapism.
By Tiffany (Read All the Romance)
Alexa Riley's books are pure escapism for me. They're not realistic, there's not much character development, and in most of their books, there's not even much plot. But I enjoy them anyway. Shielding Lily is probably one of my favorite of Riley's books that I've read so far. On the sweet to smutty spectrum, this one is definitely off the charts sweet--but fear not, it's got plenty of dirty parts to keep you happy, too.

Lily is a high school senior who has just transferred to a new school in the middle of the year. After the tragic death of Lily's mother, Lily's father has become a raging alcoholic. Lily is the image of her mother and it's slowly driving her father mad, causing him to lash out at Lily, physically and verbally abusing her. Lily just wants to finish school and find a job so that she can escape the hell of living with her father.

Ren is the star quarterback at Lily's new school. He already has a full ride football scholarship, so his future is set. He has loving parents, but despite being the golden boy athlete, Ren doesn't really have friends and tends to keep to himself. Something is definitely missing from his life.

When Ren meets Lily, it's safe to say that it's love at first sight. Ren is drawn to Lily's vulnerability in a way that makes him need to protect her. There's no sense or logic to it; it's pure instinct. Lily isn't sure what to make of Ren at first, but soon realizes that he has sincere intentions. She knows that she can trust him.

As is the standard with Riley, the couple falls for each other fast. At first, Lily's more hesitant because she doesn't want love to destroy her the way that it has with her father. But Ren quickly convinces Lily that he only wants to protect and care for her.

There were some things I didn't like: for example, just how quickly Lily and Ren go from both being virgins to having amazing, mind-blowing sex. Also, the numerous epilogues were a bit tedious for me.

Having said all that, as insta-lovey and unrealistic as this book is, I still liked it. There are moments when Ren is so darn sweet that I was actually smiling at some of the things he says to Lily. Here I was, reading this book, smiling like an idiot. This book is sweet enough to warm even my cynical heart.

It's kind of hard to believe that this is the same writing team that brought us Trailer Park Virgin (because that book was filthy to the max), but there you have it. I'd especially recommend Shielding Lily to readers who might be new to Alexa Riley and aren't ready to dive into their taboo books just yet. Loyal readers might still enjoy this, but just be aware that this isn't a full-on smutfest like most of their other books.

Awww factor!
By Carrie Marie
Ren & Lily are so, so sweet! They are both gentle souls, somewhat shy until they're together. Highly enjoyed this quick read - it's fully developed even tho it happens over such a short period of time. And of course, the steamy times are steamy! But it's refreshing in that these two don't just hop into bed right away in their relationship, and I really liked that direction for these characters.

My only complaint - and it's not really a complaint, more of a confusion - why are there like 16 epilogues? I mean, they're essentially just more chapters to the story, not really an epilogue. So, that was weird. But the story portion was awesome! : )

Perfect Young Love
By J.Bourgeois
Lily is the new kid in town and school. She is shy and just wants to blend in and graduate in a few months. Ren has pretty much everything at his fingertips. Full scholarship to college, but be doesn't like to be notice. He makes good grade, plays football and he is good at everything, but he rather be left alone the be a poplar guy at school. Then one day he sees the new girl Lily and he feels like he needs to get to know her and a attractiveness comes over him for her. You just never know when the one will walk into your life and you will stop at nothing to have it. This is a story of young love and also finding your perfect match.

A Land without Jasmine, by Wajdi al-Ahdal

Winner of the 2013 Said Ghobash Banipal Prize for Arabic Literary Translation.

A Land without Jasmine is a sexy, satirical detective story about the sudden disappearance of a young female student from Yemen’s Sanaa University. Each chapter is narrated by a different character, beginning with Jasmine herself. The mystery surrounding her disappearance comes into clearer focus with each self-serving and idiosyncratic account provided by an acquaintance, family member, or detective. The hallucinatory ending, although appropriately foreshadowed, may come as a Sufi surprise for the reader. Less mystically inclined readers may want to reread this tale to construct an alternative ending. This short novel has echoes of both the Sherlock Holmes stories and The Catcher in the Rye as, in addition to the mystery and a murder, the novel contains candid discussions of coming of age in a land of sexual repression. Wajdi al-Ahdal is a satirical author with a fresh and provocative voice and an excellent eye for the telling details of his world.

Review
A Land Without Jasmine- A gripping page-turner from a gifted and original storyteller, superbly translated

This novel deals with many social and political issues such as the sexual repression of males in a conservative society and the corruption of public institutions yet it does so in the guise of a thriller that keeps the reader enthralled. The story is told by several characters whose accounts do not often tally with one another, leaving room for the readers to synthesise their own version of the truth. Altogether a gripping page-turner from a talented writer, superbly translated by William Maynard Hutchins.

It is a novel which succeeds in addressing issues of sexual oppression and repression without sacrificing narrative tension. Through its use of multiple perspectives we are given a revealing insight into society, reminding us that no event, or place, has an objective existence or truth. Wajdi al-Ahdal is a gifted and original storyteller.

A Land Without Jasminegives fascinating insight on life in Yemen, with a thriller-like plot that keeps the reader turning the page. In sparse, lucid prose with a tight narrative structure, the author paints a riveting portrait of sexual confusion, frustration and shame. The translation succeeded in creating an enjoyable English read and at the same time preserving the soul of the original.

Too flawless for this world
By Neodoering
This book is about a young Yemeni woman named Jasmine, who is beautiful and virtuous and feels herself to be hemmed in by the desires of the men around her. One day she disappears while attending university, and the search is on. The police interview family, friends, neighbors, and try to find the missing girl. There is plenty of suspicion but only one clue; several people saw a mysterious, white-haired man with her during her last few hours at the university. The police search for this person while collecting accounts from everyone who knew her.

The ending of this book is well prepared for and is a bit of a mystery, but there are only a couple of real possibilities. You need to know a little bit about Middle Eastern folklore to figure out what probably happened to Jasmine, but this is provided in the book, in brief. In the end, someone is blamed for Jasmine's disappearance and is disappeared himself, and life goes on...without Jasmine.

This book is actually just a novella, 82 pages long, and is something you can read in an hour and a half. I was caught up in Jasmine's disappearance and swept along in the police investigation, as all the witnesses weigh in with their accounts, and as the ending comes closer I was pleased at the final outcome of the case. This is a fast-paced, interesting book about a young woman who maybe was not quite meant for this world, and found a way out of it. I wish I knew how Jasmine herself felt about her disappearance, and whether she was happy in her new state of being, but the book sort of answers at these questions, in a way, and you can take it as you like. The book reminds me of "A Palace in the Old Village," by the Moroccan writer Tahar Ben Jelloun, which also has a mystical ending, though a different one than this book. I find I rather like mystical endings, if they're well prepared for. They're different than run-of-the-mill literature and open out your sense of possibilities in life. A good book that'll grab you from page one and spit you out the other end going, "Huh!"

A Land Without Jasmine
By Melinda
A Land Without Jasmine sends a very clear message violence will occur with sexual frustration (rape and murder), repression both political/sexual exists and also leads to violence as well.

The novella is told in six voices which causes a bit of choppiness probably a factor of language translation issues. The author uses quite a bit of symbolism throughout the story. My only concern it is rather stereotypical in a negative way toward Arabs, could cause reader to be unjustly prejudice.

"In the mosque our men pray devoutly and piously, embodying such praiseworthy characteristics that they seem to be Merciful God's angels. But the moment they're back on the street they forget God, morph into evil demons, practice duplicity, deceit and perfidy, and chase after forbidden pleasures."

Quite a controversial novella, leaving the reader in limbo - which might have been the authors intent. Wajdi Al Ahdal is a rogue author, his writing causing his leaving Yemen. He takes on controversial subject matters and isn't afraid of potential backlash. A fresh voice, a maverick revealing a side of Yemen and the Middle East few would touch.

Dance, Spectacle, and the Body Politick, 1250-1750From Indiana University Press

From the mid-13th to the mid-18th century the ability to dance was an important social skill for both men and women. Dance performances were an integral part of court ceremonies and festivals and, in the 17th and 18th centuries, of commercial theatrical productions. Whether at court or in the public theater danced spectacles were multimedia events that required close collaboration among artists, musicians, designers, engineers, and architects as well as choreographers. In order to fully understand these practices, it is necessary to move beyond a consideration of dance alone, and to examine it in its social context. This original collection brings together the work of 12 scholars from the disciplines of dance and music history. Their work presents a picture of dance in society from the late medieval period to the middle of the 18th century and demonstrates how dance practices during this period participated in the intellectual, artistic, and political cultures of their day.

Review

Nevile (research fellow, Univ. of New South Wales, Australia) has assembled an intriguing book that in many ways serves as an encyclopedia of early dance--a feat not easily accomplished in one volume. She arranges the 14 essays in five main sections: "Dance at Court and in the City," "Dance and the Public Theater," "Choreographic Structure andMusic," "Dance and the State," and "Dance, Society, and the Cosmos." The contributors cover the material in detail, explaining how dance served to promote and advance those in the higher echelons of the social order, primarily in Italy, France, England, and (to a lesser extent) Germany--i.e., in countries in which court life defined the "body politick." One misses attention to dance at other levels of the social order and to the fashions and manners that accompanied the fetes and spectacles, but even without these this is a fine resource for those who research this specialized period of dance history. An excellent glossary and bibliography and a "list of dance treatises, manuscripts, modern editions, and translations" complete the book. Summing Up: Recommended. Graduate students and researchers. --ChoiceJ. G. Harris, Independent scholar, March 2009

"... This is a great book for understanding music, dance and the part they played in the period covering 1250-1750, in Europe. It is filled with a whole cosmology of ideas. How the arc of five centuries connect, are enmeshed, develop and flow into our own day. This book is a treasure." -- Paul-James Dwyer, Toronto Early Music Quarterly, Winter 2008

"Makes a serious and much needed contribution to cultural history, filling a gap that to my knowledge is not approached in any other volume. It should be of interest to everyone in the field of cultural history. It provides as complete an overview of dance history as one could hope for that period." -- Timothy J. McGee, Trent University

"The combination of so many well-researched articles on dance, ranging from the Medieval era to the Georgian period, makes this collection invaluable to anyone interested in dance history." -- Mary Jane Warner, York University

A big bite of dance history scholarship is undertaken in this study, and it does not seem to be too big for Jennifer Nevile, the editor of the volume, to chew. She manages to weave an introduction into the book, and each of its six subsections make the promise of its lofty title (and the ideas it appears to embrace) within her grasp. Given the book's vast chronological sweep-rather more than the 500 years suggested in the title, since the very useful essay on 'Plato's Philosophy of Dance' by Graham Pont increases the range substantially-it was my guess, when I embarked on my journey through its pages, that I would find some themes on spectacle or the carnivalesque that would override chronology. Or maybe there would be a sociological/anthropological approach to the embodiment of status relationships (politics) through dance that would render chronology secondary to social configurations. With excited anticipation I dove in, expecting to find something along these lines. Although I was not disappointed, I discovered something quite different. The book features a nice selection of generally excellent essays by some leading authorities in historical dance. Each essay offers information situated in its own time frame, and each presents a secure control of primary and secondary sources and includes a very useful list of recommended reading at its conclusion. Some essays provide tantalizing new details (John S. Powell's piece on Beauchamps and public theaters in 17th-century France and David R. Wilson's review of the basse danse are good examples). Some interpret well-known material in new and promising ways. Jennifer Thorp's piece on 'Dance in the London Theatres c.1700-1750' makes me look forward to her important new work. Two essays review material the authors have already addressed, but nevertheless do so here in a compellingly compact way; Ken Pierce's offering on the choreographic structure of Barouque dance and Margaret M. McGowan's essay on court dancing in 16th and 17th-century France. Only a pair of essays (not counting the deceptively erudite and versatile 'Introduction and Overview' by Nevile herself) really fit the themes of bodies, politics, and spectacle announced by the title. Julia Prest's offering on politics and ballet in Louis XIV's France is pretty perfunctory. But Linda J. Tomko's essay on 'Mr. Issac's The Pastorall and Issues of "Party"' really does embrace the kind of inquiry I was expecting. Tomko's is a truly analytical study that responds with vibrancy to the themes called for by the volume's editor. Most of the authors represented here undertake their tasks with precision and skill. Many succeed, and all should be acknowledged for their contribution: those not already mentioned include Alessandro Arcangeli; Katherine Tucker McGinnis, and Karen Silen. Jennifer Nevile's multiple contributions to the volume cannot be praised sufficiently; her essays on Renaissance dance are impressive, her introduction to the volume full of perception. I suppose we must await some future in which an individual truly finds a connection among the various manifestations of social, stage, and court dancing over the ages. But I wonder if this is really important. Dance, after all, is body, is spectacle, is 'politik' (however we configure it). I'm just not sure that Guglielmo Ebreo (15th century), Cesare Negri (c. 1535-after 1604), or Mr. Isaac (late 17th, early 18th century) shared some common agenda (let alone believed they did) when they created their splendid dances. Nevile, nevertheless, would have us believe that something like the same bodies, the same spectacles, the same kinds of politics were enacted (perhaps unintentionally) over and over again across the centuries addressed in this volume. Maybe she is right. The scholars she has brought together, however, do not appear to espouse such a grandiose vision but appear more concerned with a narrower, well-informed view of dancing in a given place at a given time. Congratulations to them all, and to Nevile for bringing this impressive collection to life. I have profited considerably from reading the offerings presented here, and I am certain others will, too. I will recommend readings from this volume to my students for years to come.Richard Semmens, University of Western Ontario, Professor of Music History, Early Music America : Mag Historical Perf, Spring 2009

"Jennifer Nevile's accessibly written anthology seeks to explore many now obscure aspects of early dance: contributions by twelve scholars elucidate the fascinating, multifarious nature of dance from the thirteenth to the eighteenth century.... contributors demonstrate a high scholarly standard and pursue their chosen themes with assurance and passion. The great forte of this collection is its ambitious, multidisciplinary range, and the authors' practical insight, honed by years of performance experience, represents a rare feat indeed.
