This book manages OOP with numeric methods

As a C++ programmer, familiar to both numeric programming and RAD programming, I must say that this book is the best choice for anyone searching for a clear introduction to C++, OOP focused on numeric programming. Many books lack of numeric examples or OOP concepts, while Yang's book manage to balance them with uncommon sucess. A great book!

not quite good, but not bad to read

It's a huge topic and the book does offer a promising title. But it doesn't deliver, at least it confused about what is object-oriented.

Writing stuff neat and reusable is not quite OO; when you are talking about a field, ex. numeric computing, framework or the concept of organzing that much of stuff depend on for the rest of your life is more important than some specific topic like vector, matrix, etc and their implementation. They are dead objects, at most you can call them numeric computing, but no OO please.

By far I havn't seen any decent OO numeric computing book, 'cause most of these numeric stuff was first used by fortran ppl for long long time without any OO used. IMHO, fortran should be dead 5-10 years ago, but it's not, such a shame.

I think one feasible way to start OO computing is to learn using the latest c++ tools (ex. boost, blitz, loki) to develope your own framework for your computing eviorment.

Must-Have for Scientists & Engineers Interested in C++

This is probably the best C++ book on the market for scientists and engineers. Yang's book rivals, yet complements Barton & Nackmann: whereas B&N provide a good overview of "big picture" design issues (but provide few example problems), Yang provides many useful examples of problems relevant to scientists (natural sciences, not computer science!) and engineers (not computer engineers!), such as linear algebra, polynomial interpolation, numerical integration, and finite differences. The usefulness of Yang's contribution is not so much in providing the numerical methods (which can be found in standard texts), but in providing examples of designs of class hierarchies and object-oriented strategies for solving numerical problems. Yang also provides an excellent discussion of performance issues, and demonstrates a number of strategies (using function objects and/or templates) for making C++ code as efficient as C or Fortran.
The book is concise, yet complete in its coverage of C++, compliant with ISO/ANSI, and includes the latest features such as templates, namespaces, and the STL. I cannot comment on how well the book works as a first book in C++, but it does start at the "beginning", and the author is using it as a textbook in an undergarduate level C++ course. The writing style is clear, making it easy to follow even complex concepts. My only complaint is that the book is biased towards mathematical methods. I would have liked to see examples of object-oriented methods for simulation of physical "objects" and phenomena; similarly, the omission of a discussion of how to best represent "global" physical constants (global variables vs encapsulation in namespaces or classes, etc) was surprising. Bottom line: if you are a scientist or engineer interested in using C++ and OOP in your work, Yang's book is the only book other than Barton & Nackmann worth buying. I hope Yang goes on to write "Numerical Recipes in C++"!

This is the one, the greatest masterpiece of the physical sciences.

Reading most anything by Isaac Newton is a challenge. We must contend with the inevitable changes in English during the intervening three centuries. But after that there is the content itself. Newton discovers that mechanics and astronomy may be unified into one theory, using the deductive method of Euclid's "Elements." The novelty and profundity of these concepts still astonishes us today. True to his vision, we find elaborate mathematical and geometric constructions. For example, "Proposition XXVII: To describe a conic that may touch five right lines given in position." The discussion is complex (right = straight), the figures are beautifully austere, and the proposition is followed by a scholium and a lengthy lemma, with attendant figures! Other propositions are discoveries in mechanics, as "Proposition LXXXIV: To find the force with which a corpuscle, placed without the centre of a sphere in the axis of any segment, is attracted by that segment" (corpuscle = particle, and without = not on). Regardless of the topic, Newton is always concise (sometimes too concise), and always on point, so that it reads like a vast tutorial about the way the universe works. It's beyond extraordinary how so much theory and experiment can be organized so well by one man. I recommend this book at the very least as an antidote to the bastardization of the term "genius" by the main stream media today.

One does not have to start on page 1 with his famous three laws (or axioms) of motion and plow through. It's good to skip around and read the less formidable theorems first. We are humbled, but we learn a lot.

Florian Cajori's many end notes help us appreciate how truly revolutionary Newton's ideas were. But note that Cajori's notes are found at the end of Volume II, "The System of the World," which is another book.

Taste genius firsthand.

It's great to have a copy of Principia in my sweaty little fists. You don't have to read the whole thing. Just dabble, and get a sense of Newton unfiltered through textbook authorities dully distilling the original pioneering into old hat. Also use Google Books to sample the works of the other greats.

BTW, "On the Shoulders of Giants" is just the name of a series with introductions by Stephen Hawking. The book is still purely Newton's Principia. It's in English the original Latin. There have been several translations to English. A weakness of this edition is that it does not make explicit which of the first three editions of Principia or which of the later translations to English this translation is based on.

Isaac Newton - Still a Genius

The Principia has been one of the most widely-recognized and well-respected texts on how to think for nearly six centuries and counting. In this book which may appear deceptively similar to any modern mathematics class on how to build nearly any theorem from axioms and natural observations (which is exactly what Newton describes to be on the inside of his own mind), practically every aspect of natural philosophy is covered somewhere, from the mechanics of how a cannon-ball fired off the edge of the universe may lead to the eventual discovery of quantum particles, provided one removes the cannon and replaces it with a net before the cannon-ball's inertia runs out, or brings it full circle, whichever may happen first owing to any available quantity of saltpeter required during the initial launch, to the likelihood of any earth-like planet turning into a star when a cannon melts explosively into a vaguely-cannon-shaped glob of plasma which has no moment of inertia except towards a much tighter orbit towards any such planet's core, provided the celestial body not specifically under observation at the first event time can and will be observed regularly during flight after the initial burst of illumination fades sufficiently to observed any reflected light through it.

Rumor has it that Isaac Newton invented gravity (and calculus), which may eventually prove true should there ever be a sufficiently convincing enough body of evidences that Newton didn't invent practically everything else in the entire universe while he was at it. A somewhat more skeptical jury may have to settle on the possibility of Newton hanging only those without enough ink and paper to write down anything important enough for somebody else to claim that Newton hadn't already heard all of it before and probably should stop working long enough to listen for a few lifetimes. The Principia suggests Newton never really got around to doing the later, however, as he was little too busy doing all of God's thinking instead (and who can really blame him for failing to point out the obvious - God was a little to busy creating everything to put in an appearance, and had already hired the Inquisition by then to ask why anybody would ever believe in God instead of the Inquisition anyway).

In a more infectious era of mass communication, where -any- consistency of function across -any- mathematical domain is a novel idea and any proof of anything widely enough available that somebody or another will get around to writing the equivalency down in a blog or a spam broadcast eventually, Newton remains one of the geniuses who could still be considered sane by an authoritative member of an unknown extraterrestrial species replicating his own observations on Earth, although language barriers and translation may still be of obvious consideration. If you're not the sort of person who actually approves of algebra, however, you may approve of the English-language version's similarity to the Kama Sutra if you're the sort of person who doesn't like listening (and reading) carefully. This right here is a river of information about different types of fishing, and pretty much anything you need to know to get out in the water and catch some fish. It leans toward the technical side, straightforward, to the point, contains a lot of amazing illustrations. I read the whole book in just one day!! Yup, it's that good. Been going to it back and back again to refresh my memory on some of the chapters. So useful. If you love to fish, and want to learn a bit more, you won't regret this one. It does contain a few editing errors like spelling mistakes but with the incredible amount of illustrations you may not even notice.

I read this book looking to learn how to fish again. It has a great deal of valuable information that will teach you to catch fish. It's superb and a great complement to the Art of Freshwater Fishing.
