Western ideas about mental illness-from anorexia to post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia, general anxiety and clinical depression-as well as Western treatments have been sweeping the globe with alarming speed, argues journalist Watters (Urban Tribes), and are doing far more damage than Big Macs and the Gap. In this well-traveled, deeply reported book, Watters takes readers from Hong Kong to Zanzibar, to Tsunami ravaged Sri Lanka, to illustrate how distinctly American psychological disorders have played in far-off locales, and how Western treatments, from experimental, unproven drugs to talk therapy, have clashed with local customs, understandings and religions. While the book emphasizes anthropological findings at the occasional expense of medical context, and at times skitters into a broad indictment of drug companies and Western science, Watters builds a powerful case. He argues convincingly that cultural differences belie any sort of western template for diagnosing and treating mental illness, and that the rapid spread of American culture threatens our very understanding of the human mind: "We should worry about the loss of diversity in the world's differing conceptions of treatments for mental illness in the same way we worry about the loss of biodiversity in nature."

During the last quarter-century, America’s cultural influence on foreign countries has become all too visible, with a McDonald’s opening on Tiananmen Square and remote African tribes sporting jeans and T-shirts. Perhaps less obvious, but no less worrisome, is the American exportation of mental illness documented in this unsettling expose by the coauthor of the recovered-memory critique, Making Monsters (1996). Watters emphasizes that different cultures have long had their idiosyncratic ways of handling stress that don’t necessarily conform to descriptions provided by the American Psychological Association (APA). Yet, because the APA’s treatment guidelines are increasingly being subscribed to and Western medicine’s recommended drugs prescribed by other countries’ health-care workers, such illnesses as anorexia and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are appearing in cultures previously unfamiliar with them. In making his case, Watters provides four carefully dissected case studies, those of anorexia in Hong Kong, PTSD in Sri Lanka, schizophrenia in Zanzibar, and depression in Japan. Ultimately, Watters argues, the loss of cultural diversity consequent upon this peculiar form of Americanization will be keenly felt. --Carl Hays

For Those Interested in Medical Anthropology

Ethan Watters, an American journalist explores in his book Crazy Like Us, the globalization of American based mental illnesses such as anorexia, schizophrenia, PTSD, etc. In his book he explores four different types of illnesses and allows the reader to see just how much impact the American definitions and symptoms of these mental illnesses have had on other societies.
He is able to keep his readers captivated by incorporating the stories of people who are inflicted with this disorder. He also allows the reader to see how the disorder progressed from having a cultural specific identity to being manipulated into an entirely new being. One of his first examples is that of anorexia in China, at first the reason behind the disorder was completely different from our own, that was until it became exposed to the population.
Which is where Watters introduces the concept of western technology and science. In his book he stakes the claim that because of the advanced science and technology possessed by the United States, leads to less economically stable countries to embrace ideas that are foreign to them without thinking how it will affect their cultural background. He proves this point several times in the book, whether it be the United States influencing the introduction of a mental illness to another country, or the use of data collected in the United States in order to push a new SSRI.
Watter’s takes a topic that is what some would call near and dear to individuals of the United States, as mental illness is becoming a more prominent issues, and showing how it is negatively affecting societies that have not been introduced to these ideas. Meaning that no these societies quite possible did have these disorders in their society but before the globalization of their symptoms and definitions they had an entirely different meaning. They became something new instead of what they had always been. The reader sees then when reading chapter three of schizophrenics in Africa, the disorder was always there just never given a name or symptoms addressed to it. Instead it was just a burden to bare from God. Which is where the reader gets to see how the society accepts and treats the disorder.
Watters book is very well constructed and easy to lose oneself in because of the stories he tells of others, and does not bog down the reading with countless studies done, or scholarly information that takes away from the meaning. If one is interested in anthropology, and medical studies this is definitely a book to read. It not only touches base with American culture, but several other cultures, and also gives the reader a taste of the medical aspects of the world. It also allows the reader to see a more in depth view of medical companies and how sometimes these companies are not out for the betterment of individuals; they are out for the betterment of their wallets. Watters took a unique topic and allowed the individuals stories speak for themselves on how globalization has left a devastating footprint on numerous societies; a footprint that some individuals may not be able to recover from.

An ok book for an Abnormal Psychology course.

I read this book for an Abnormal Psychology course. It's an ok read, and the language is clear and accessible, which helped me to read it quickly. The formatting is clear, and every chapter has an interesting story that doesn't lull you to sleep, unlike many other books which the professor required. However, Watters never comes out and states whether he feels that globalization is damaging or acceptable. The tone seemed very matter of fact and neutral most of the time, which helped the bigots in my class express their problematic views freely with the book as backup. It would have been nice if the book had focused on more than a few select cases, e.g., in the PTSD chapter, instead of focusing just on Sri Lanka, it would have been very helpful and interesting if another case study had been used. The book itself is ok, although some of the material and the author's inability to take a stand was irksome.

A Challenging and Fascinating Read

Ethan Watters is a journalist who writes particularly about mental health. The premise of this book is that American understandings about the mind and the self, particularly ideas about mental illness and treatment, are being aggressively promoted and replacing traditional beliefs and practices in nonwestern societies. You might think this is a good thing, a sign of progress or modernization, if you believe Americans know more than the rest of the world about mental health. Watters clearly does not. He is of the opinion that psychiatry is culture-bound: that each society has developed its own idioms of distress and culturally meaningful forms of treatment, and Western psychiatry is rapidly destroying them. The American narrative of the moment is a particularly banal one that thoughts and feelings are just a batch of chemicals that psychiatrists can alter with drug therapy. Watters is well-read on the subject, and he has gone around the world to talk to researchers who are questioning the Western narrative. He has written an exceptionally clear, engaging, and persuasive book. As a psychological anthropologist trained in psychiatry, there is little here that I did not learn as a student thirty years ago, but this is the first book I would recommend to anyone who wants to explore the relationship between psychology and culture. It clearly challenges the prevailing premise of universalism, that the psychology and psychiatry of people everywhere is essentially the same and that culture is largely irrelevant.

Very helpful

I first came into contact with this one at a school library. After looking at it once, I found myself buying a copy. It actually surpasses its title. It claims to be only about edible plants, but it also directs you in the process of making Mescadine Grape leather (a type of cold drink) and other recipes, and it even tells about edible fungi.

This truly is an essential guide to long distance motorcycle touring.
I am an 80 year old rider and have found that in this book, everything needed for a successful trip has been included.
Here you will find help in choosing proper clothing, equipment, accessories and tips on where to go, where to stay and how to make your plan. Mr. Coyner has gone to great lengths to produce a guide for every biker, those who have the wherewithal to travel in this country and abroad.
He has also asked other professionals to offer assistance in their field of expertise.
A thoughtful guide written in layman's language that is helpful for the beginner as well as the seasoned long distance motorcycle tourist. I will highly recommend this book to my friends and fellow riders.

I was only a few pages into this book when I got some post-it notes to flag pages fro future reference. There is a lot of useful information about route planning, equipment, smartphone apps, web resources, etc. that I would not have thought to look for. Well worth the price if you have any interest in traveling by motorcycle.

Great eye candy, but not a serious history

Forget the minimal text: Hairstyles Ancient to Modern is a huge, heavy picture book with gorgeous production values. It’s a publication you’d expect to see laid out at an upscale beauty salon, to entertain patrons until the hairdresser is finished with the previous patron. It is not for choosing a new do. Although it will probably inspire theatrical costumers and retro enthusiasts, it’s not for serious academic research.

As in big histories of costume, the illustrations go from Ancient Egypt to The Present. Although a very small number of historical portraits is reproduced, the vast majority of images depicting styles from before the mid-1840s are reprinted from 19th-century works on historical hairdressing, presumably originally meant for educational or costuming purposes. From then on, most are reprinted from contemporary fashion magazines, going from color fashion plates to black-and-white photos to color photos as technology changed. Although many of the hairstyles are high, aristocratic, or formal fashion, they are styles some people actually wore (even those 18th-century wigs with the model ship on top). Many styles shown for the 1920s and 1930s are refreshingly simple and ordinary.

Unfortunately, the author has succumbed to the temptation of many costume historians, of apparently assuming that everyone knows about recent fashions so let’s just show extreme art. The majority of hairstyles supposedly depicting the past 40 years were probably worn by no one except that one model for that one photo shoot. They involve stiff and often enormous structures made of artificial hair, fibers, and unknown materials. Examples are: Worms in a range of lurid scarlets and yellows. Apparently writhing Medusa snakes. Structures composed of dozens of stiff overlapping circles. A huge pair of upright horns resembling a lyre with no strings. Rows of Cubist boxes extending a couple of feet on each side of the head. And much more. It’s a pity, because even in high fashion there have been plenty of attractive and wearable styles from the 1970s up till now. Let’s hope no future fashion historian reprints these photos as actual hairstyles as opposed to fiber art.

this book is not a true representation of its title

As a hairdresser, I was excited about this book, especially when I saw the plates in the beginning with ancient roman hairstyles. However, the history portion of this book is grossly incomplete, only touching on western European and American hairstyles and stylists. Moreover, the modern styles read as an advert for Toni and Guy. The book feels hodge-podge, there's no direction, no continuity, no story. May be a good book for someone interested in hair, but not a real reference for a serious stylist.

Not the best for a few reasons

So far I have Examkrackers, Princeton, and Kaplan (2015+ versions). After comparing the three, Princeton has the thickest books and there may be a lot of extra content outside the scope of the new MCAT. Seems to be following the AAMC guidelines.

On the other hand, not all of the books are 2nd edition inside the package; for example, some are first, second, and even third editions. This is concerning because the package is labeled as "2nd edition", which may indicate Princeton slapped a label on their old books and updated a few. It may be for the best, however, I think it would be professional if all of the books were in uniform edition. Additionally, I purchased this package anticipating many practice questions, especially passage based passages. To my disappointment, there is only 1 passage at the end of each chapter for practice with around 5-9 chapters per book. This is really not enough for practice. As a good alternative, Examkrackers has 30 minute exams at the end of each chapter in their books. The EK exams consist of 3-4 practice passages per exam.

The good news for princeton is that they offer 3 full length practice tests for this package, which are brand new. However, because there are not enough passages, excessive content, and differing editions per book, I have to give it three stars. Kaplan seems to have a more concise review than Princeton. Examkrackers has more passages than Princeton. Overall, this Princeton package is good for its 3 practice tests.

If I were to buy it all over again;
First, I would purchase the Princeton Biology book because it will most likely cover everything. Second, I would buy the Kaplan Biochemistry and Psychology/Sociology book (these subjects yield 53% of the MCAT). Third, I would utilize Examkrackers Physics, Organic Chemistry, and General Chemistry because they are straight to the point and this is only 25% of the new MCAT, plus there are a good amount of practice passages at the end. Lastly, CARS section, 22% of the MCAT, requires pure reading and practice; while yes there are "strategies" to tackle passages, most of them are common sense and you would be better to invest the money in a lot of practice passages. I hope this helps.

I would recommend getting two books from the second edition – The ...

For those wondering how 1st Ed. compare to the 2nd Ed.:

I was going to apply for medical school last cycle but I had a serious illness midway through MCAT prep and had to postpone to this year. So I have the unfortunate, but distinct pleasure of owning both the 1st edition and the 2nd edition of this set.

TL;DR (Better get used to reading long, excessive literature if you preparing for the MCAT ) :)

Get the 1st edition if $ is tight. Save your money for the AMCAS/AACOMAS. The two editions are basically the same. I would recommend getting two books from the second edition – The Psychology and Sociology Review and the new Biochemistry Review. The Biology Review is pretty good too.

The second edition corrects glaring mistakes found in the first edition, such as one of the main kinematics equations in one of the example problems listed as ½ (Vo-V)t on page 53; corrected to ½ ( Vo + V)t on the second edition.

There’s very few new content. Briefly skimming and picking random topics to compare in the two editions, the vast majority of content is identical almost page for page – same exact paragraphs, diagrams, charts, images, example problems, explanations, etc. More importantly, the vast majority of review questions and single practice passage at the end of each chapter is the same. There are a handful of passages that are new to the second edition, but most are just recycled from the first edition. I’m really disappointed because according to the AAMC, the new MCAT tests and focuses more on “multidisciplinary approach in critical thinking, data interpretation, and analysis applied to experiments and experimental research”, and I’ve read many students struggle on these type of passages. So I was hoping the second edition would have more experimental based passages for practice.

New content is very minor, and few and far in between for The Biology Review. For example, the old Biology and Biochemistry Review has 3 sections for “Statistics and Research Methods”. They moved those three sections to the Appendix of the Physics and Math Review – 2nd Edition, and added a new section – Conducting Experiments on Humans. It is 3 paragraphs of really basic info. There are also various minor changes to the Biology Review and a handful of different end of chapter practice passages, but almost everything else is the same between the two editions.

In terms of similarity, the Organic Chemistry, General Chemistry, and Physics Review are virtually identical between the first and second edition. The new MCAT tests less from these three subjects anyways, and given that the content is virtually identical, I feel that getting the first edition would be perfectly fine for content review on these subjects. Likewise, the Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills Review is virtually identical between the first and second edition.

The Psychology and Sociology Review has more noticeable improvements between the 2 editions, e.g., in the first edition, there were cartoon drawings of facial expressions representing various emotional states versus actual facial expressions in the second edition. Some topics also contain better explanations, examples, etc. However, the second edition still recycles almost all the same end of chapter review questions and practice passage.

In the 2nd edition, they pulled out the chapter on Biochemistry Review and made it a standalone book, and expanded on the topics significantly, including NEW end of chapter review questions and single practice passage. Still doesn’t include Michaelis-Menten despite it being on the official AAMC topic list.

Final thoughts:

I think The Princeton Review Princeton Review MCAT Subject Review Complete Box Set, 2nd Edition is a pretty good MCAT prep source ( 3.5/5). In my opinion, I think The Princeton Review strikes a decent balance between EK (very brief, concise) and Kaplan/TBR (maybe too detailed) in terms of depth in their content review. From what I’ve read so far, none of the major prep companies has come up with good practice passages representative of the new MCAT, except the AAMC materials. Get the second edition if you don’t have it and want to use TPR as your primary MCAT prep source. However, first edition is also fine. Another valid option is to get the Psychology and Sociology Review, Biochemistry Review, and possibly Biology Review from TPR, and use another company for the other three subjects.

I want to wish all of you the best of luck on this journey. Study hard; study long. We are not alone in the suffering! It will all be worth it in the end.

Save Your Money

This book unfortunately is an inferior reproduction of a genuinely valuable book by Cheiro. It appears to have been xeroxed then mass printed. The reproduction is so bad that the photographed palm prints given as crucial examples at the end of the book cannot be read because they came out black rendering the lines of the palm invisible. The information Cheiro has to give is truly important. He was THE premiere palmist of the late 19th and early 20th century and what he has to say is extremely important to anyone interested in palmistry. This book however, because of its poor reproduction, is worthless. Try to find a better reproduction or investigate auction sites for an original copy.

A Very Good Book with Some Faults

This is a very good book. You need to spend time on it to appreciate its value----accuracy!! Follow closely what the author says, attempt to read the lines on your palm and judge for yourself... At least in my case, they are amazing accurate.
One concern about this book are the 31 plates of Famous Hands at the end of the book. You can hardly see them clearly (too much dark parts with the lines), the last printed page is a picture of Cheiro's Indian Room (an absolute black-or-white "photograph", not a normal black-and-white photo in shades of grey). Fortunately, the author makes little reference to the 31 plates, the only mention is on page 147 (refers to Plate XXV) and page 150 (Plate XXIV). With a brief description of the appearance, for example, on page 147, "The excessively drooping of the line of head (Plate XXV) on a pointed or conic hand ...", is useful when the reader reads parts of page 147 and 150.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Certain parts of the main texts are also not very clear (but still can make out the words)---looks like xeroxed copy of a xeroxed copy, for example pages 16 and 17. If you can get hold of this copy, look at these two pages and decided whether you still want to buy this book. Not all people will find the printing acceptable.

Good but ...too much paper for little text

Yes, there are 296 pages including the blank ones. though the book brings valuable information about hand reading, the price is too high for a xeroxed copy. But if you don't mind that and you are seriously involved in learning hand reading it is OK.
I am happy anyway, the information here will let you know accurately the past, present and future, health state and much more.
