Skyfall

A short story that sets up a unique dystopian world, introduces us to some interesting characters, and takes us through a few conflicts. The resolution of the main conflict in this story leaves the reader hanging a bit, as it sets up what appears to be the start of the planned sequel. All in all a fun little read.

About the Author
The late Prof. Prasannakumar B. Junnarkar was born in a family devoted to classical learning. Prasannakumar’s formal university education was in Mathematics, in which he took his Master’s degree from Elphinstone College, Bombay. He also obtained a degree in Law. In 1922 he joined the Dacca University, where he served till his retirement in 1948 as the Head of the Department of Commerce and later as the Dean of the Faculty of Commerce.Though he had been a student of mathematics and law and was for many years a teacher of commerce, Prof. Junnarkar’s first love was always Sanskrit. He began the work of simplifying Paninian grammar while still at the Dacca University, but the bulk of the work was the product of 14 years’ unaided labour continued despite ill health – in his quiet retirement at Navsari in Gujarat. He died at Baroda in 1975 at the age of 82.

difficult font for sanskrit text

It is so unfortunate that the publishers of this series chose the bizarre and ornamental "aparajita" font (available on MS Windows) to represent the devanagari text. It is readable only with difficulty. Had the publishers made a very slight effort to pick a more readable font for the Sanskrit text, such as the Mangal font (also readily available on MS Windows), this would have enhanced the usefulness of this insightful and potentially valuable four-volume set. This work makes enjoyable reading to anyone familiar with आष्टाध्यायी and सिद्धान्त कौमुदी.
For anyone out there that finds "aparajita" easy to read, my apologies and क्षमस्वमेतद्.

good book for beginner, despite minor printing errors

If you're new to Systemverilog's assertion language (SVA), and want to learn the syntax, this book is for you. The book walks through every major SVA construct (sequence, property, implication operator, repetition operators, etc.), providing detailed examples for each construct.

Unfortunately, some examples are difficult to follow. There is a cycle-based signal-diagram for each example, but the diagram is small, unannotated, and ultimately hard to interpret. (You pretty much have to read the text while jumping back and forth to the diagram.)

Also, the book's coverage of methodology is weak. If you're already know how to write SVA constructs, and are more interested in 'when/where/how' to use SVA, then there are better books out there.

I read VHDLCohen's book for systemverilog assertion but lots of errors in that book. This book is far better for beginners who want to learn how assertion based verification works. It explains SVA with lots of examples.

Intro & title story will fascinate esoteric history buffs.

I only read one story, Deadline, because of it's historical significance. It is more of a spy story than science fiction, but well-written in a style that blends the action, exposition, & dialog fluidly, with suspense, making it easy to read straight through quickly, except for the technical part, which you could skim through unless you're interested in it's scientific accuracy. I was interested -- I read the story because of the "urban myth" about the FBI investigating the story and meeting Astounding editor John W. Campbell, which turns out to be completely true, and is elaborated in the introduction to this book.

I highly recommend Deadline & Other Controversial SF Classics to anyone interested in the history of science fiction or interested in more esoteric history of World War II or cold war espionage, as much for the introduction as the story. The other stories are apparently irrelevant to that end, but may be a bonus for SF fans.

The only reason for 1 less than 5 stars: The kindle was published sloppily, with some big spelling & punctuation errors, and no active table of contents to skip to the primary story. But that story and intro are worth 4 stars.

Garbage

I expected more out of this book, considering that it is Barron's. However, this book proved to be one of the brand's rare missteps.

Many of the questions in the reading comprehension section either don't make sense or don't accurately represent the types of questions in the real SAT. I was shocked to see that answers to some of the questions didn't even appear in the passage! I remember coming across a question which asked you to define what a certain term meant. Even with the context, it was impossible to answer it without having a background knowledge of that subject. The author clearly failed to realize that all answers to questions must appear in the passage.

Though the reading comprehension section of this book is complete garbage, the sentence completion section stands out. The questions in that section are generally harder than those found in the real SAT, but they make good practice tools to help you correctly answer those last two difficult sentence completion questions that appear in each critical reading section. To supplement this section, the book comes without a list of words that have frequently appeared in the past SATs. Most of the words were pretty basic, but they definitely did help me clearly define those words that sounded awfully familiar but which I didn't know their exact meanings.

I would not recommend buying this book solely for the sentence completion section. It's not worth the money. I would invest just a few more dollars to get the Barron's full SAT book (the 24th, 25th, or 26th edition), which are far, far better than this mediocre book.

Extremely dissapointing

I got this book expecting it to be a harder version of the regular test section, much like Barron's does for all their books. This book has passages that are either too long, or their questions are too vague. On the regular college board or even Kaplan practice tests (which are good for CR), the questions are concise (i.e in like 5-6).. Barron's does not have this. It is crap. EXCEPT...EXCEPT for the sentence completions. If you need help with sentence completions go for this, the practice is really good and realistic.

The reading passages never helped me.Instead,it makes me frustrated because the answers sometimes cant be directly found in the passage,or they don't make sense at all.Anyway 800 vocabularies are good to know!

Evwerything from William Albrecht is Gold. DOn'ty just buy this book, buy them all. I did, and it has changed my life. It is a good idea to start out with his book: Weeds, Control without poisons as well as Eco-Farm. The world will be a little better of a place. and your soil and plants will love you for it.
