A Very Good Play

I really like this play. We're reading it for a film class and watched the popular adaptation, His Girl Friday, and we read this play as well. It is very well written and the dialogue is awesome. Read it quickly. The dialogue is very fast paced and if you try to hang on every line, it becomes a little boring after a while. Anyway, I just wanted to rate this play because I think it is very good and it only has one, one-star rating and I think that's very unfair. Read it!

CLASSIC COMEDY

This is the review of the play I posted as advertisement for the production of it I'm in starting next week.

I understand people who think it reads flat. It does. But it's an example of play that plays better than it reads because it's attuned to certain basic affinities we have for comedy.

It’s 1928, the Jazz Age, Chicago the Windy City. A bunch of reporters sit in a pressroom playing cards. They’re waiting for a condemned man to die. One is on a phone, dredging up one more story to spark the pages of his newspaper the next morning. For the most part, they’re low lifes. The two things they have in common are a nose for news and a jaundiced eye for anything elected officials tell them. Sex, violence and graft sell for them --the more they can dig out, the better. They’re the original “Show Me” crew.
One of them complains: why couldn’t they execute the condemned man two hours earlier so the news could make the City Edition? Then they hear that the condemned man has escaped. What follows is controlled chaos, with a line of sharp chatter but Keystone Kops comedy too.

Everyone’s a type in this play: the reporters, the conniving editor who’ll do anything for a story but pay his reporters what he promised them, the society matron whose son wants to marry –god forbid- a female reporter who may be a woman but can’t be a lady, the goodhearted lady of the streets, the sheriff and mayor who are as incompetent as they are corrupt (and they’re HOPELESSLY corrupt!).

Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur had been reporters in Chicago so when they moved to New York to write a play, they drew on their Chicago experience. The play was an instant hit. It went on to the movies, appearing three times in different clothing. In the second version, His Girl Friday, reporter Hildy Johnson became a woman instead of a man, which is what she is tonight in the Prospect production.

Why do we find irresistible a play written so long ago? What’s the attraction? It appeals because the playwrights knew how to write comedy. Unlike the pap that’s offered up today, true comedy is immortal. We love seeing other people take pratfalls --it reminds us that we’re fallible without exposing us to the embarrassment of having to fail ourselves. Besides, at heart, reporting is always a comic transaction: reporters make fun of high ideals because the people they meet so often lower them. And when that happens, they’re there to let the rest of us know it. Like in The Front Page.

The Front Page was first written in 1928. Over 75 years later it still feels timely. Even if some of the language is from another era, the sentiments are truly of the present.

Excellent RPG for new and experienced players with some let downs from the publisher.

This is a great crunch-light tabletop RPG overall - I particularly like the fact it doesn't use the typical polyhedral dice that the typical fantasy games use, as it makes it easier for new players to invest in the system. The production quality is great and the value for what you are getting is superb. Why am I knocking it one star then? Really light bestiary section adds some additional work on the GM to create/convert creatures (though there is a bestiary coming out supposedly at the end of the month). The biggest reason for the loss of a star is that the book EXPLICITLY tells you to go to greenronin.com to download reference and initiative sheets on page 87; but they don't actually exist. You can find fan produced versions, but I find it kind of sad that a company with the clout of Green Ronin can't follow through with such a simple thing as provide downloads they themselves said would be available.

Nice flexible system that can be customized for the type of game that the group wants to play. One drawback is that the adversary section is very small and not a lot of support for this book yet.

Great fun, book could use some beefing up.

i've been a PC and a GM for this system for a few games now and i love it. it's fast paced and simple simple rules make it great for beginners or anyone who doesn't want to calculate how many turns a torch will last you. very narrative driven and with only one prefab campaign (titans grave) available right now it's heavily dependent on home brew adventures and a good GM. the monster section however is pretty slim and chaaracter creation could be explained better explained. overall though whenever i sit down with this game on the table i have a huge amount of fun.

Fun book, great games, but no beginner designs.

Twelve origami racers and two dinosaurs make up the lineup in this fun origami book, along with four games to play with your creations and paper to fold and stickers to individualize them with. I really like that the book includes the games!

My 17-yr-old son immediately whipped up one of the racers. He is quite experienced with origami, and thinks that the book is for kids ages 11 and up, unless they have experience or someone to help and guide them. Our 10-yr-old daughter said that it looks fun, but she became confused over some of the instructions and needed her brother's help.

The book includes six pages of basic origami techniques, and each design has a difficulty rating from 3-5 stars (out of 5 possible), so there aren't any easy or "beginner" designs.

The biggest difference between this book and another book by the same author, Robogami, is that this game includes games to play with your origami creations which makes this book exceptionally fun. Robogami has an advantage in that several of the designs are relatively easy (though he uses a different scale). Like Robogami, this kit would make a great birthday present that is just a little bit different from normal, in the best of ways.

Fun and creative!

Everything you need to act out the intergalactic space race is included! The introduction and overall theme of this kit is quite cute and creative my daughter got a kick out of it. Once we read the intro we cracked open. The paper and started with the first project in the book. Origami is really hard! The pictures and instructions are very clear and concise. I had to call in some help with the folding but after we got a hang of it we were able to get some done. We are hoping to have a whole fleet soon!

This is a great kit for those who like to fold planes and animals with 17 to 46 steps. These intricate origami projects can then be used to play games, races and contests featured in the book as well. Everything is in the kit including blue and yellow paper!

Another Good Tracy Crosswhite Novel...

This novel was a little predictable, but I like the main character and the writing style of the author. I was a bit disappointed in the ending and was hoping for a different outcome, but in hind-sight I guess it was appropriate. This novel has two story lines, which I liked, but it seemed to get in the way of what appears to be the main story line. I do like how the author incorporated aspects of the previous novels and in this story it calls the reader back to those scenes. I like that because, while at the time they seemed incidental, they are pivotal to the stories in this novel.

The second great story in a set of three!!

Robert Dugoni has done it again. my only regret is that I have to wait until May for the 3rd book in the series to be published for kindle :( .
the book is well written, the story unfolds very well. The characters are, once again, perfect for the story line. Tracey and her team work so well together. There are bad guys of a different type in this book. To understand that, you must read it. But it is a read worthwhile for sure. You get absorbed into the story, and you feel what the characters feel, remorse, pain, fear, the adrenalin spiking and all that goes with it. You know how sometimes you are watching a show, or a movie, and you just want to take your hand and smack one of the characters across the face? Well, this book makes you want to do that to one in particular. I still feel like slapping him silly, and I finished the book last night.
Take this book, curl up on the couch with a blanket [if your weather has turned chilly like ours just did] and enjoy the time reading this one.

Better, But...

Better written than the first book, though frequent mentions here of a mysterious absence from Seattle, for the trial in that first Tracy Crosswhite adventure, are rather clunky. Surely the northern Cascades region, (Leavenwirth, Chelan, etc), is not so far from Seattle that a major absence from the SPD would have been required. It's almost like she had to take time out for a trip to Mars!

As mentioned in my review of the first book, the author's use of the New York Ital/English term "couple days" is far more frequently thrown around here and becomes very annoying, very quickly. Outside NYC, pretty much the whole rest of the English-speaking world says "a couple of days".

Another quibble here is that towards the end, THE END was clearly in sight, at least as far as the author was concerned. What suspense had been building was suddenly discarded for a mad rush to get to the big reveal. No exploration of Tracy's reduced duties, no further exploration of Nolasco's activities in this time - just a sudden jump to WHAM-BAM-IT-MUST-BE-THIS-GUY-GUNS-DRAWN-SHOWDOWN.

There are decent stories in these two books, and they'd both have been considerably improved on with an editor not afraid to use the red pen.

Very Outdated & Wrong

The first law talks about the first mover advantage, being number one in a category. However, if you read Peter Thiel's "0 to 1" book he talks about the last mover advantage being better. If you ever tried to be first in a specific niche, you know that that takes lots of money, lots of time, and lots of failures. Most companies can't stomach it, and the ones that do stay around after being number one aren't there because they're pioneers. It's because all the other major components of a business fell in line.

The second or "last" mover can come in when the first mover pioneer validated the market and do things better. Examples? Facebook, Toyota, Samsung, Nike, +1M more.

Many of the 22 "laws" have flaws like this. Most their advice is illogical and useless. Moreover, their proof is name dropping companies that are either extinct or lagging. That's terrible evidence. Do yourself a favor and avoid this book.

Usual Fabulous insights from the Authors

This book is sensational. Compact and crammed with salient philosophy. The scenarios they present make obsolete conventional marketing.
Just today I read an article in WSJ that said Chevrolet truck sales are down, and they are taking shots at the leader, Ford's F-150. They used a "nifty" ad that shows concrete being dumped in each trucks bed. Silverado had barely scratched paint and a few dents, but 150 had holes punched through the floor. Conventional marketing. Completely useless!

You can't change peoples minds... just about every dude I know ( and me) considers F-150 the best. It's the perception that counts. It wouldn't matter if the Silverado was better. Ford scoffed at the marketing "stunt" as well they should. 150 will stay the leader indefinitely. Why didn't Chevrolet's marketing people read this book? They could have saved a whole bunch of money by not doing this campaign.

Parts of this book are so brilliant, and dense, that I found myself reading certain paragraphs several times to really grasp the concepts. I have several of the author's books, they are all excellent. The only flaw is that this book is 30 years old, so some predictions of certain businesses' prospects didn't come true. Did you ever try to change a woman's mind? Right. That's the rub. Once people think of a product or service as best, it is very difficult to change their minds down the road.

These 22 Laws of Marketing Got Me Through Grad School

This tiny book was one of my favorite books in grad school. It had been a requirement for one of my classes, but I continued to use it for sources and such when I did papers. Mr. Ries and Trout do a great job providing 22 of the main marketing strategies. One of the 22 schemes was as follows: Remembering that you have to be first in most marketing schemes. This was probably my most cited book in graduate school. I would highly recommend this book.
