Amazing book.

I don't know why the individual before me gave this book such a terrible review. This book is wonderful! The availability of a frequency learners dictionary in Czech is phenomenal.

The most populated countries in Europe are Russia, Germany, UK, France, Italy, Spain, Ukraine, Poland, Romania... and at 14th stands the Czech Republic.

The fact that this book even exists is not something to be quickly overlooked.

As for pronunciation, it is true that it doesn't give you a phonetic transcription of the words. However with a little work in remembering the sounds of the Czech alphabet, Czech amazingly sounds the way it is spelled; unlike that of English.

When learning any language all you need is perseverance, practice, a good dictionary, a verb conjugation book (if you can find one), and a frequency dictionary will definitely expedite the process.

Thank-you Routledge. Keep up the good work. And I also give a hat tip to your German edition as well!

Like the content, but not very Kindle friendly.

This is a great dictionary for it purpose, but using the kindle version, there are not enough hyperlinks to its various parts. For example, when you go to "Alphabetical Listing", you need to PAGE through every page until you find the word you want. There's no way to jump via a link to each letter in the alphabet. To avoid the paging, I end up using the keyboard search feature all the time to jump to the word I'm looking for. My first experience with kindle books, I found it a bit frustrating. The content, however - the categorization, example sentences, and words included are very helpful.

Isn't this the cat's meow? An encyclopedia of Witchcraft for the 21st century. Although it can be used by going to the index, I read it from cover to cover. This is the best Witchcraft encyclopedia I've ever read or had. What a blessing! Quite a myriad of topics: a grand discussion of botanicals, understanding fairy tales, Witchcraft's uneasy life past and present, talk of boon and bane in Witchcraft, an inquiry into Women's Mysteries. I could go on; that's a tiny picture; there's much much more. There's a 21 page index, 9 page bibliography, and enough to entrance your interest forever. I recommend this book for today's serious student.

Her research and writing activities have focused on adult development and learning, and program planning and evaluation. She has authored or coauthored a number of books, including the award-winning Learning in Adulthood.

Sandra Ratcliff Daffron, president and CEO of the Institute for Professional Training & Education, is an international authority on adult and continuing professional education and professor of adult education at Western Washington University.

Strongly prefer the 2nd edition to this 3rd one

In my doctoral studies, I learned program planning with the 1st edition of this book. Over the last 13 years, it has been at my side as I administered educational programs for museums, corporate training departments, and institutions of higher education. When the 2nd edition came out, I updated my own copy. Frequently, I purchased the book for my own staff.

When I learned a 3rd ed was out, I was thrilled because I hoped it would incorporate the many exciting technological developments since the 2nd edition was written. While it does do this, it also left online (and not in print) MANY of the helpful figures and exhibits that are at the heart of what make this an ongoing user's manual.

IF I were teaching a program planning course, I'd have to use this 3rd edition and spend the time pulling online exhibits (accessible with purchase of written text) to the attention of my students. As I practice program planning, however, I simply do not have the time.

Aggregation of individual opinions into a social decision is a problem widely observed in everyday life. For centuries people tried to invent the `best' aggregation rule. In 1951 young American scientist and future Nobel Prize winner Kenneth Arrow formulated the problem in an axiomatic way, i.e., he specified a set of axioms which every reasonable aggregation rule has to satisfy, and obtained that these axioms are inconsistent. This result, often called Arrow's Paradox or General Impossibility Theorem, had become a cornerstone of social choice theory. The main condition used by Arrow was his famous Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives. This very condition pre-defines the `local' treatment of the alternatives (or pairs of alternatives, or sets of alternatives, etc.) in aggregation procedures.
Remaining within the framework of the axiomatic approach and based on the consideration of local rules, Arrovian Aggregation Models investigates three formulations of the aggregation problem according to the form in which the individual opinions about the alternatives are defined, as well as to the form of desired social decision. In other words, we study three aggregation models. What is common between them is that in all models some analogue of the Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives condition is used, which is why we call these models Arrovian aggregation models.
Chapter 1 presents a general description of the problem of axiomatic synthesis of local rules, and introduces problem formulations for various versions of formalization of individual opinions and collective decision. Chapter 2 formalizes precisely the notion of `rationality' of individual opinions and social decision. Chapter 3 deals with the aggregation model for the case of individual opinions and social decisions formalized as binary relations. Chapter 4 deals with Functional Aggregation Rules which transform into a social choice function individual opinions defined as choice functions. Chapter 5 considers another model &endash; Social Choice Correspondences when the individual opinions are formalized as binary relations, and the collective decision is looked for as a choice function. Several new classes of rules are introduced and analyzed.

Solid Introduction to the Law in the Hebrew Scriptures

It is a shame that this book is out of print. It offers a solid introduction the law in the Hebrew Scriptures Law. Patrick begins the study be reviewing the place of critical scholarship and biblical law. He then moves on to the various 'books' of law in the Hebrew Scriptures dedicating a chapter to the Ten Commandments, the Book of the Covenant, Deuteronomic law, Holiness Code and Priestly Law. He rounds the book off with two final chapters and a postscript. The second to last chapter discusses the difference between written and unwritten law. The author points out that the earliest codes of law were essentially written forms of an unwritten law code (descriptive). He claims that it wasn't until Deuteronomic school that the law became synonymous with the written law (proscriptive). He continues this argument by claiming that with the love commandment (in MK 12.28ff & Pars.) the law reverts `back' to an unwritten law. The final chapter discusses the place of covenant making in Old Testament law.
This book seems to cover most of the main issues dealing with the law in the Hebrew Scriptures (at least at the time of its writing) and presents the material in an accessible way. I had two minor complaints of the book. The first criticism I had of the book was the lack of cultural anthropological insights in discussing some of the law codes (especially the laws dealing with the cult). The second criticism may only be my perception, but I seemed to notice a slight prejudice against post-exilic writings (DTRH, Holiness Code, and Priestly Law). These minor quibbles aside this book is a good place to start for learning more about law in the Hebrew Scriptures.

An intriguing journey into a past that affects over half the people on the planet

If you're interested in finding out more about ancient Jewish practices and law, Dale Patrick's book is an excellent introduction. It may be 30 years old, but the Old Testament hasn't changed for centuries. Patrick's analysis is very well-organized and thorough. His work is based on solid historical methodology, and he is careful to explain that methodology before he begins this intriguing journey into a past that affects over half the people on the planet. Many books on this subject are dry husks, appreciated only by scholars. Not so with Old Testament Law.
Biblical criticism is still controversial, so if you believe the Bible should be followed, not analyzed, this is not the book for you. Most students of the OT are now familiar with the various "sources" from which the final Masoretic text was composed, called J, E, P and D for "Yawhist", "Elohist", "Priestly" and "Deuteronomist". These different textual traditions are explained and the reasoning behind this approach is a basic assumption of the book. This is only the beginning. Patrick takes the reader on a trip that begins with the 10 commandments, through Deuteronomy, examines the holiness codes and the concept of the covenant, and ends up asking "What is the meaning of this law?"
Well-written, with a good bibliography for further study, and thoughtful.
An excellent companion to this book is Martin Noth's The Laws of the Pentateuch.
