Louis Vuitton City Bags: A Natural History, by Jean-Claude Kaufmann, Ian Luna, Florence Müller, Mariko Nishitani, Colombe Pringle

This volume is an unprecedented history of Louis Vuitton’s women’s bags, the most coveted line of accessories in women’s fashion. At the heart of Louis Vuitton are its City Bags, a range of women’s bags that dates back to the turn of the twentieth century. Featuring the trademark monograms of the house, the City Bag story began with the Steamer, a resort bag designed in 1901 to be packed inside a much larger steamer trunk. These bags have in a hundred years formally diversified into a dizzying array of handbags for every conceivable function demanded by the modern woman. Profoundly influential, City Bags are now known to millions by their descriptive names (Keepall, Bucket, Papillon, Alma, Locket, Noe, Speedy) and are still evolving into more fantastical forms. Lavishly illustrated with new and archival photography, historical graphics, landmark editorials, and ad campaigns, the volume traces the history of these specific bag families, and examines the earliest specimens and today’s most sought-after collectibles, including Vuitton’s collaborations with Takashi Murakami, Stephen Sprouse, Richard Prince, Yayoi Kusama, and Rei Kawakubo and one-off projects by Zaha Hadid, Shigeru Ban, Vivienne Westwood, Helmut Lang, Andre Putman, and of course, Marc Jacobs. Louis Vuitton: City Bags is an ambitious volume on the creation and cultivation of a cultural phenomenon.

Review
“This volume—which comes enveloped in a richly hued marbleized cover—takes sociology of fashion seriously, tracing the development of Vuitton’s trademark bags through “a system mimicking the scientific classification of plants and animals”…interviews with Vuitton collaborating artists, vintage paparazzi shots, and fun packing lists round out the book.” ~Vogue

“City Bags examines the century-long development and manufacture of the iconic lines that helped make the handbag a fashion staple for modern women…the authors and illustrators of this handsome volume, bound in buckram canvas with a swirl-paint print, trace the rich genealogies of Louis Vuitton staples…” ~Surface Magazine

“In Rizzoli’s latest luxury monograph, the creation and evolution of Louis Vuitton’s legendary handbag line gets a jolt of intrigue, thanks to a clever conceit: each bag is treated like a species all its own, classified and categorized with scientific precision.” ~V Magazine

“This book delineates the genealogy of the Vuitton bag, with stops along the way to show amazing photos of vintage Vuitton bags, complete with travel stickers. There are terrific images from vintage advertising dating back to the beginning of the 20th century.” ~WWD

“By the end of the book, your appreciation for LV bags will be so high you may find yourself drawn to your nearest boutique to admire the craftsmanship in person.” ~Lucky Magazine

“No matter what you call it, Louis Vuitton City Bags is nothing short of remarkable in its detail paid to every single style, permutation, and generation from this fabled brand. The book takes a genealogical approach with how and why each handbag evolved and is amazingly illustrated with renderings that look like family family trees as well as photographs. Louis Vuitton City Bags leaves no stone unturned and really might be subtitled “Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About a Louis Vuitton Bag and Didn’t Know You Needed to Know (But You Do).” Without exaggeration, the creators have compiled facts, drawings, data, and history that are usually afforded to the categorization and authentication of antiques or fine jewelry rather than mere handbags. One must assume that LVMH does not look upon a Louis Vuitton bag as just any handbag bit as a slice of their long and revered history.” ~New York Journal of Books

“I certainly won’t look at a handbag in quite the same way now that I have read this amazing publication. This certainly is a great book to give as a gift…and one which will form the centerpiece of any fashion fan’s collection.” ~PoliticalStyle.com

“City Bags combines a unique, appealing approach to almost a scientific play on iconic shapes. The first comprehensive taxonomy of Louis Vuitton’s City Bags, a range of women’s handbags that date back to turn of the 20th century.” ~Trouvaillesdujour blog

A great gift for the LV lover!
By Marie Fisher
My friend is an LV collector - I couldn't afford to buy her a handbag, but this book was the perfect gift. It's pricey enough that most people won't purchase it for themselves, and perusing the beautiful illustrations will keep the LV aficionado occupied for hours!

Great book for any LV fans!
By Wen
i flipped through this book while at my local bookstore, while i love the rich photographs and wonderful writing, i was hesitant to pay $80+ for it (or $130+ at LV...!). after a quick search on Amazon and thanks to their 30% discount, i was able to get it for less than $50. the book arrived nicely packaged and i really enjoy reading it.

The Te of Piglet, by Benjamin Hoff

The Te of Piglet . . . in which a good deal of Taoist wisdom is revealed through the character and actions of A. A. Milne's Piglet. Piglet? Yes, Piglet. For the better than impulsive Tigger? or the gloomy Eeyore? or the intellectual Owl? or even the lovable Pooh? Piglet herein demonstrates a very important principle of Taoism: The Te--a Chinese word meaning Virtue--of the Small. Happy 90th birthday (October 14th), to one of the world's most beloved icons of  literature, Winnie-the-Pooh!

From Publishers Weekly
This topical Taoist manifesto, a sequel to Hoff's bestselling The Tao of Pooh , was a 21-week PW bestseller.
Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
Ten years later, a sequel to the runaway bestseller The Tao of Pooh. If you like marshmallow laced with arsenic, it was worth the wait. In the original, as you may recall, Hoff had an Idea: that Winnie-the-Pooh could be used to explain Taoism, the ancient Chinese way of balance. Now, as luck would have it, Pooh's buddy Piglet turns out to be the perfect embodiment of Te, the Taoist term for virtue, which is attained through sensitivity, modesty, and smallness. Piglet, you see, is a ``Very Small Animal'' (for all his talk about smallness, Hoff, like A.A. Milne, who must be groaning in his grave, likes capital letters Very Much), and the diminutive porker's adventures are the perfect means to preach, Very Lightly, about being positive and ecological and upright. The trick is to ``observe, deduce, apply''; once done, the millennial ``Day of Piglet'' will arrive and human beings will once again achieve ``the state of paradise that existed before the Great Separation occurred.'' Watch out, though: All is not summer in the 100-Acre Wood. Beneath the goofy grin one finds bared teeth, as Hoff snaps away peevishly at Confucianism (``authoritarian, No- Nonsense attitude toward life''), Christianity, feminism (``behind their antimasculine words, it's Overmasculinity as Usual''), Republicans, critics, computers--whatever raises his Taoist hackles. All in a Good Cause, of course. No doubt, The Ching of Eeyore comes next. Then what? Well, by then the Day of Piglet will have come, and the whole world will be a Trillion-Acre Wood...so empty your pockets while you can, and watch Piglet bring home the bacon. (Illustrated with 51 line drawings from the original Pooh books. However did they dare?) -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

is an amazing book. Hoff should have stopped there
By Christopher Michael
The Tao of Pooh, is an amazing book. Hoff should have stopped there. This book isn't glaringly awful, I didn't destroy it after reading it or anything. But really, this book is just not as good as I expected it would be. Towards the end Hoff does a lot talking about what is essentially a doomsday and what's wrong with our society through the stylistic veil of "The Tao of Pooh" This book seemed more like a personal rant presented through the incredibly successful form of "The Tao of Pooh"

Get "The Tao of Pooh" instead, just read that. Pretend that this book doesn't exist.

Loved Te of Pooh, Hated This
By Vicky K. Woodard
Benjamin Hoff used this as a soap box to rant about nuclear power, political correctness, 1990s education and even microwave ovens! These issues did not resonate as timeless and were tedious to someone hoping for more on Tao philosophy. I did finish it, and there was a sprinkling of Toa even in the last pages. Don't know that I would have kept reading if I hadn't been stuck in a hotel in Arlington on a very cold January day!

An Apocalyptic Rant
By Anthony V. Harris
I too thought this was going to be a book in the same vein as the original, with cute quips and parodies on the Winnie the Pooh stories. I read it from beginning to ends waiting for them to show up. Instead, I endured through a rant, in a very un-Taoist manner, about how Mr. Hoff seems to think that the Human race is the apex of what the universe has been created for and now, we have ruined the happy ending.

He needs to remember that whether we destroy ourselves and the world we live in is only a part of what will be a millennium of millennia where the cycle of life and death revolves indefinitely. Then, through all his badgering of poor Eeyore, he himself epitomized the Eeyore Principle by whining, taking an extreme position and judging others actions instead of accepting the world as it is, for what it is, regardless of how he feels it should be.

So basically this book, through Mr. Hoff's words, is a lesson of what the meaning of Te is not.

The Magician King: A Novel (Magicians Trilogy), by Lev Grossman

Return to Fillory in the riveting sequel to the New York Times bestseller and literary phenomenon, The Magicians, now an original series on Syfy, from the author of the #1 bestselling The Magician’s Land.

Quentin Coldwater should be happy. He escaped a miserable Brooklyn childhood, matriculated at a secret college for magic, and graduated to discover that Fillory—a fictional utopia—was actually real. But even as a Fillorian king, Quentin finds little peace. His old restlessness returns, and he longs for the thrills a heroic quest can bring.

Accompanied by his oldest friend, Julia, Quentin sets off—only to somehow wind up back in the real world and not in Fillory, as they’d hoped. As the pair struggle to find their way back to their lost kingdom, Quentin is forced to rely on Julia’s illicitly learned sorcery as they face a sinister threat in a world very far from the beloved fantasy novels of their youth.

    Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, August 2011: This second volume in Lev Grossman’s celebrated series picks up just after the events of its 2009 prequel The Magicians. Quentin, Eliot, Janet, and Julia are now the High Kings and Queens of Fillory, a fantastic realm not unlike Narnia, and they pass their days “deliquescing atom by atom amid a riot of luxury.” To ease his royal boredom, Quentin embarks on a quest with Julia. Despite his romantic visions of heroic feats and easy accolades, the quest goes horribly awry, and they find themselves back in the depressingly real world of Chesterton, Massachusetts. With the help of seedy underground magicians, a dragon, and a young boy named Thomas, they undertake a desperate journey back to Fillory. Grossman’s writing here is sharp and self-aware, and the characters feel like people you actually know, but cooler: they are delightfully profane and dripping with irony, they are arrogant and shallow, they are finding their way in a magically perfect world that somehow still lets them down, and they are learning to fight for the things they love. The Magician King is a triumph of (and an homage to) modern fantasy writing, and a must-read for grown-up fans of Narnia and Harry Potter. --Juliet Disparte

    Review
“[A] serious, heartfelt novel [that] turns the machinery of fantasy inside out.”
—The New York Times (Editor’s Choice)

“A spellbinding stereograph, a literary adventure novel that is also about privilege, power, and the limits of being human. The Magician King is a triumphant sequel.”
    —NPR.org

“[The Magician King] is The Catcher in the Rye for devotees of alternative universes. It’s dazzling and devil-may-care. . . . Grossman has created a rare, strange, and scintillating novel.”
    —Chicago Tribune

“The Magician King is a rare achievement, a book that simultaneously criticizes and celebrates our deep desire for fantasy.”
    —The Boston Globe

“Grossman has devised an enchanted milieu brimming with possibility, and his sly authorial voice gives it a literary life that positions The Magician King well above the standard fantasy fare.”
    —San Francisco Chronicle

“Grossman expands his magical world into a boundless enchanted universe, and his lively characters navigate it with aplomb.”
    —The New Yorker

“Grossman is brilliant at creating brainy, distinct, flawed, complex characters, and nearly as good at running them through narrative gauntlets that inventively tweak the stories that generations have grown up on.”
    —The Portland Oregonian

“The Magician King, the immensely entertaining new novel by Lev Grossman, manages to be both deep and deeply enjoyable.”
    —Chicago Sun-Times

“Readers who have already enjoyed The Magicians should lose no time in picking up The Magician King. For those who haven’t, read both books: Grossman’s work is solid, smart, and engaging adult fantasy.”
    —The Miami Herald

“Now that Harry Potter is through in books and films, grown-up fans of the boy wizard might want to give this nimble fantasy series a try.”
    —New York Post

“Lev Grossman’s The Magician King is a fresh take on the fantasy-quest novel—dark, austere, featuring characters with considerable psychological complexity, a collection of idiosyncratic talking animals (a sloth who knows the path to the underworld, a dragon in the Grand Canal), and splendid set pieces in Venice, Provence, Cornwall, and Brooklyn.”
    —The Daily Beast

“In this page-turning follow-up to his bestselling 2009 novel The Magicians, Grossman takes another dark, sarcastically sinister stab at fantasy, set in the Narnia-esque realm of Fillory.”
    —Entertainment Weekly

“The Magician King is clearly the middle book in a trilogy, but it’s that rare creature that bridges the gap between tales and still stands on its own. And just as the first book showed that growing up is hard no matter how much power you have, it shows that becoming an adult involves far more than just reaching the right age.”
    —The A.V. Club

“Fabulous fantasy spiked with bitter adult wisdom—not to be missed.”
    —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Fans of The Magicians will find this sequel a feast and will be delighted that a jaw-dropping denouement surely promises a third volume to come.”
    —Booklist

Even better than the first one
    By Topkat2
Even better than the first one, which I loved. I am consistently delighted by the ways in which Grossman uses the conventions and touchstones of fantasy fiction -- and I don't just mean the Harry Potter series and the Narnia books, but, for example, "The Tempest," which of course features one of literature's great magician kings -- to enrich and twist his story, to add nuance.

I have a couple of friends who say they don't like the series because the narrator is "a whiner." I don't really understand this complaint: I have not tended to feel the need to love my protagonists. And I'd argue that one of the greatest fantasy series of all time is E. Nesbit's "The Five Children and It" series, narrated by a spectacularly pompous, self-satisfied young man named Oswald. As with Quentin -- the narrator of the "Magicians" series -- Oswald's heart is in the right place, but he is delightfully irritating. And the books would not be nearly so satisfying if the narrator were NOT so irritating, if he were less self-absorbed, more aware of his own fallibility, etc. Because in his irritatingness, he -- both he's -- is LIKE US. He's human. And that both makes his foibles funnier and gives his tragedies some real emotional weight.

after initial doubts, I'm so glad I continued this series!
    By IHS
After finishing the first book in this series, I must admit, I did not like it. It just did not resonate with me. it was exciting sometimes, sure, and the last half I red in a day, but still, I was very unsure if I wanted to start reading the second. I did, and I'm so glad! I don't know what changed, if it was the books becoming better, or I becoming more used to them, anyhow, I loved it. It is both fun and charming, but still manage to mix this up with great suspense and some pretty grizzly scenes. The book flows nicely, and it has the rare quality to really make me feel what the characters are feeling. Not always a pleasant feeling! Now that I finished all three I really do feel like there is a hole, I have no idea what to do with myself, and are desperately looking for a new series that can fill the void after the magicians.

and I found lots to enjoy even while some things frustrated me to no end
    By Pickwick
"The Magicians" had writing and descriptions that sparkled on the page, and I found lots to enjoy even while some things frustrated me to no end. Rather than an ordinary fantasy, it was an ironic take on how the easy availability of fantasy can destroy our ability to live in the real world, and it did destroy some characters who were frustratingly consistent in failing to overcome their weaknesses. For all that frustration, Grossman is such a good writer ("a far better writer than an author," to paraphrase someone else's review) that I was eager to read "The Magician King."

It was dreadful. The writing is less clever, the characters less interesting, more predictable, more frustrating. Grossman, as in "The Magicians," borrows parts of Narnia and other worlds, including ours, to twist them in new ways, sometimes creating something new and interesting; but more often, the result ends up as a predictable poke at pop culture. He does not succeed nearly as well as in the first book. If he intended to write a book for this moment only, he may have achieved his end, but "The Magician King" has way too many "in-jokes" to last. Frankly, that kind of humor quickly bores me, anyway.

As others have mentioned, there's a shocking, disgusting, gratuitous scene that comes out of nowhere and serves no purpose that couldn't have been served by a less vile plot point.

I pre-ordered the second book; I'll wait for the third to appear in libraries--and read it once I've gotten through everything else on my list.
