About the Author

Venerable Master Hsing Yun is a Chinese Buddhist monk, author, philanthropist, and founder of the Fo Guang Shan monastic order, which has branches throughout Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia, and the Americas. Ordained at the age of twelve in Jiangsu Province, China, Master Hsing Yun has spent his over seventy years as a Buddhist monk building what he calls Humanistic Buddhism: Buddhism that meets the needs of people and is integrated into all aspects of life.

In 1949, Master Hsing Yun came to Taiwan and began to nurture the new burgeoning Buddhist culture in Taiwan. He served as an editor and contributor to many Buddhist magazines and periodicals, authoring the daily columns Between Ignorance and Enlightenment, Dharma Words, and Hsing Yun s Chan Talk, as well as starting his own Buddhist magazine, Awakening the World, in 1957, and the first daily Buddhist newspaper, the Merit Times, in 2000. Master Hsing Yun authored many important works including the Song of Silence, the Biography of Sakyamuni Buddha, and National Master Yulin. Master Hsing Yun also edited and sponsored the Fo Guang Encyclopedia, the most authoritative Buddhist reference work in the Chinese language. His contributions have reached as far as sponsoring Buddhist music and art, to creating Buddhist programming for television, radio, and the stage.

I'm very new to Buddhism, but the Dharma has already helped me in my day to day life. It seems like as I learn about Buddha's teachings, I see the world more clearly. "For All Living Beings" has been a great resource for learning more about Buddhist practice and how to be a Buddhist. It explains Buddhist beliefs in a very clear and concise way. If you're new to Buddhism, this is a wonderful book for beginning the journey towards a better, happier life. If you're a Buddhist with a good understanding of the fundamentals of Buddhism, this will reinforce your understanding with unique examples and expert insight into the teachings of the Buddha.

An accurate and well written history of Polaroid

My father was an engineer in the model shops at Polaroid--he started in 1943 and retired in 1980--and worked often with Dr. Land. Much of the story in this book was dinner-table conversation at our house. Christopher Bonanos gets the story of those years right, particularly the personality traits of Edwin Land, and tells it in a very readable way.

In the years after 1980, I paid less attention to the company (except when the corporate takeover goons took away my mother's pension and health benefits) and the book brought me up to date nicely. I think the recent parts of the story are missing from the other books about Polaroid.

Impossibly great.

As an instant film and Polaroid enthusiast, I was pretty pumped about getting this book. I was even more delighted when it showed up though. It's fun to read, I knocked the whole thing down on a long day of travel, and I couldn't have been happier with it. It's a great story of the inner workings of a company and a man who had an impossible idea that he made real through with little more than genius and determination.

The book also offers many full-color photo reproductions and impressive illustrations. Whoever art-directed the book gets a high-five from me. It's beautiful.

Folks who like to read about Steve Jobs and crazy CEO-types need to get on the Edwin Land bus. That guy was the OG super controlling genius boss.

A great book, but lackluster Kindle implementation

I have been a long-time admirer of Polaroid (the innovative company, not the one that slaps its badges on sub-par consumer electronics). When I came across this book in my local bookstore, I was enthralled, and read the first 4 chapters in one seating. Not wanting to wait to receive the physical copy, I purchased the Kindle version which I read on my various tablet devices. Unfortunately, while the content is excellent, the presentation of the Kindle version is far inferior to the original book. Firstly, the layout was awkward, with footnotes being relocated to the end of each chapter. Secondly, the formatting was highly suspect. When I flip through the pages I frequently found whole pages missing or repeated. This was especially pronounced when one clicked through the footnote links -- attempting to return to the original text from a footnote often landed one in a completely different section of the chapter! Furthermore, each time the font size was changed, multiple paragraphs will disappear into thin air! This is totally unacceptable, and because of this, even though I ostensibly finished the e-book, I can never be sure how much of it was actually unread!

So in conclusion, 5 stars for the content, 1 star for the formatting.

An oldie but a goodie.

O.K., this book is old. Many of the methods and chemicals are no longer used. At the same time much of what is here is still used today and some of the items are not to be found in other books. This is in fact the book that Weingart used as his reference guide. Much of what is here will prob never be used again unless you are a "retro pyro"; the shell section in particular has very dated material on making the shell casing. At the same time an item called a saucsisson (very similar to a comet) is very workable and not to be found in many other places. If you like pyrotechnics and don't mind a little dated material then I would recommend that you give this book a glance. The illustrations are very good. Many of the most highly touted pyro books give you very little in the way of working knowledge. This is not one of them. I personally found the age of the book to be a part of it's (if you will pardon the expression)charm. This is the only book I have ever seem where the author gives you info on how to be sure all of the stars in a roman candle shoot to the same height. The rocket section is my personal favorite. The fact that American Fireworks News chose to reprint this book some time back says a lot from my viewpoint. Don't just write it off because it is "old".

How your great-grandfather made fireworks.

Friends, this book is first-source material for fireworks history thus putting it in the same league with Weingart and Brock's History and, incidentally, making it a splendid companion piece to Stu Carlton's translation of the 1820 Ruggierri. It is not a "cookbook" for how to make stuff that will get you busted by the BATF or how to make Parlon-laced colors. Read it for enjoyment and take a moment to think how Kentish would have loved the volley of shells shown on the cover of this edition and the idea that he was the great-grandfather of that technology!

A very good book, especially in its eBook format

This July 1st (2016), the CompTIA A+ certification rolls over to the 901-902 version, with some pretty significant changes to the test materials. I’ve been evaluating books for my upcoming classes, and decided I’d try out not just different publishers’ offerings, but different forms of the media. As an instructor, I’ve relied heavily on physical books to run my classes: they’re marked up, dog-eared and riffed with sticky notes for points I want to hit in class. Could I do as well with an eBook?
Pearson hooked me up with an epub version of this Exam Cram, written by David Prowse. I’ve been in this business for many years – and so has he. His materials are pretty darn good, including an online A+ training course I had the opportunity to preview (and review). When it comes to highly technical books, there are plenty of them that are written by committee, and read like it. I’ve got nothing against a dry, factual style, but my students seem to be more willing to read single-author books with a breezier prose style. This book falls into the second category, and has the kind of comfortable, personable text that makes reading 982 pages a lot less of a chore. By comparison, the 901-902 text by Mike Meyers runs 1472 pages of first-person conversation, while the text from Docter, Dulaney and Skandier is 1312 pages of formal discussion (what did I say about writing by committee?). Prowse gets one point for good prose style and one for shortest length, which does in fact matter.
One of the biggest changes for the new certification is the much-changed list of operating systems covered. XP is out, finally, but Vista lingers on, along with Windows 7, 8 and 8.1. Windows 10 is not covered. But OSX is getting a lot more discussion, which matches the workplace I see, mostly Windows but with a contingent of determined Mac users. The three texts I reviewed handled this issue differently. This Exam Cram splits OSs out among the main test topics, so there’s not one place that solely discusses Windows 7, for instance. Docter/Dulaney/Skandier do the opposite, with 50-60 page chapters on each major OS, which might be a good idea for organization, but does lead to a lot of duplicate discussions of installation and deployment, for instance. In my reading all three texts ended up covering the same materials for each OS, because the CompTIA A+ Objectives are so clearly spelled out in this area. Frankly, I kind of like the way Prowse handles things, discussing the topic under a major heading with subheads for each OS’s differences. iOS and Android also get a little more emphasis, though largely along the same lines as the 801-802 tests: checking versions, doing resets and synchronizing. The whole topic of OSs is one of the areas where the eBook really shines, with beautiful full-color high-resolution images.
Color images appear frequently in the text, and put the printed books’ grayscale images to shame. Many of them are close-ups of details, and I had to admire how well I could see things like silkscreen lettering on circuit boards. I wasn’t sure how comfortable I’d be using the eBook, as I’ve mentioned, and I tried more than one e-reader. Windows 8.1 offered a friendly link to the friendly Windows store for an epub reader, and served up an app that got even more friendly by installing a toolbar and search engine, and modifying my network settings, none of which I appreciated. It took some lengthy research to uninstall that crapware, then the research I should have done in the first place: what are the really good eBook readers, for Windows, in 2016? This led me to Adobe Digital Editions, much despised in its 1.x versions but apparently much improved in the current 4.5.x version. I thought I would miss my sticky notes, but the Bookmarks feature fills the gap really well. And it’s nice to click directly from the Table of Contents to a chapter, or even better, easily search for particular terms, something I had to rely on Indexes to do for me in paper books. I had to find the right tips page to figure out highlighting: select text, right-click, voila!
There are a lot of subtle things that get glossed over in a lot of A+ texts, for instance the issue of Northbridge and Southbridge, bridges that were originally real bridges with real, separate controller chips, but which are now “virtual,” in the sense of being absorbed into the main processor or other subsystems. Of the three texts I reviewed, only this one discusses the DMI bridge in Intel-processor chipsets, and none discusses DMA channels (which apply to RAM, not processors); there’s a certain degree of depth that’s being lost as different manufacturers devise very different solutions to the same fundamental problems. Intel’s DMI differs significantly from AMD’s HyperTransport bus, and both differ from Intel’s Quick Path Interconnect (QPI). Prowse gives all these some attention, and he’s the only one in this group who does. And that’s just one example.
The most important work students can do for certification exams is taking lots of sample tests. There are resources online, of course, and many are quite good. Brain dumps, on the other hand, are worse than useless because they’ll mislead you or insist on wrong answers. So the test material that comes with a CompTIA-approved text is actually really important, because for the most part it accurately reflects real question styles, for instance the frequent use of scenarios in questions. The Meyers book uses 10-question end-of-chapter quizzes that are good; they come at the end of lengthy chapters, which means you’ll read for a while before dealing with relevant questions. I have to admit I like Prowse’s Cram Quizzes, short 5-question tests that come two or three times per chapter. That’s a good idea: look at the material, then look at the kind of questions you’ll see for it. And not just multiple-choice questions, but performance-based questions like the ones you’ll be getting on the real exams going forward.
This makes for an interesting point: only Prowse’s online version of this course offers genuine simulations of the performance-based questions, for instance dragging and dropping devices to the correct slots. Obviously you’re not going to do this with either paper books or an eBook, but different writers have dealt with this in different ways. The Sybex book comes with access to an online lab and test bank, which I haven’t explored yet. This Prowse Exam Cram uses write-it-by-hand versions of the performance-based questions, which are actually pretty good substitutes, considering a lot of that drag-and-drop stuff is just silly.
Ultimately, I liked the Prowse book itself the best among this group, and surprised myself that I liked the eBook much more than I thought I would. It’s the shortest of the group I evaluated, yet covers many topics more completely. And Prowse’s writing is easy to read without trying to be too funny or chummy. Every classroom I work in has a projector, so it’s totally feasible to bring the book in digital form and put it up on the screen. When I’m drawing students’ attention to highlights, they can see exactly what I’m talking about, easily. I’m finding myself completely willing to try out this book, as an eBook, this coming term. Maybe the most interesting thing to see will be how well my students like using it. If they do, I’m going to permanently lighten my book bag and never look back.

This book was fantastic for exactly what it says. Cramming. The rip out sheets were the best portion for some basic memorization. I have to credit it at least a bit for helping me pass the 901 and 902 on the same day 2 weeks after I started studying. GOing to buy the exam cram for Network+ and Security+ when I go for those.

An excellent study and practice resource for passing both the 901 and 902 exams

This book does an outstanding job of presenting all of the need-to-know information to pass the 220-901/902 exams. My only critique is that it is laid out more like a technical manual in that the chapters are not laid out to cover 901 and then 902, so there is overlap within the chapters of material and questions that you would find on both the 901 and 902 exams. There's no easy reference to determine which pages to study for which exam. If you are planning on sitting for both exams back-to-back, this text is indispensable.

The bonus videos and real-world scenarios that can be found online after you have purchased the book are also very useful, as are the practice exams on the CD that comes with the book. The practice exams contain 655 sample questions.

Great Read!

Even though just this Tuesday I was saying that I will not be reviewing the next books in Transformed series, because I didn’t have them, here it is! I contacted the author and she agreed to give me a copy for an honest review. And hopefully next week or so I will have the 8th book read and reviewed too. But I already have a surprise planned for you in Tuesday. You just have to wait patiently. But now let me get back to the story.

There were some things that I would have loved to read more about, but nevertheless the book is great. It is very fast paced. I can even say too fast paced. If you ask me it ‘s amazing but at the same time it just intrigued me so much with the whole vampire hunters and the plague. And that’s what it was it just intrigued… we get to finally read the book in only Eylin’s POV, and it’s great. I really supported her running away to the carnival and having fun. Come on, she actually got some useful into, but then again she might have dies. Appearance of Ana as a new character is great and I really liked her, tough it’s still a mystery why Eylin was Rodrick in her, but let’s put this away for some time.

You can call me annoying for linking descriptions, ut I would have really enjoyed to red what Eylin looked like in a dragon form. I have a hard time imagining her as she is, and I have so little information about her in the dragon form. Another thing that shocked me was how fast Alre and Alexis and all the inner circle vampires came to terms of Eylin being a hybrid, and even with her liking a dragon. Too fast! I would have thought that at least Alre would have thrown a fit. But it’s going relativey smoothly.

Another thing was with Blake, his whole like in this book was too undeveloped. It was like getting rid of him, so nothing stands in between of Eylin and Darius. Call me a sucker for details, but I love when everything is explained or at least hinted. However, you can’t say I didn’t enjoy this book. I mean I finished it it 2 and half-hours. And I didn’t want it to finish, especially with the new dangers lurking nearby; the next books are going to be fantastic. And I really want some action between Eylin and Darius. Their wedding is going to be epic.

The Superb Seventh Book in the Transformed Series

I will admit that I have become addicted to this series. I love that this series has shifted not only time but also main characters. This series is continuing to be better and better. I can't wait for the next one!

Oh Eylin! What have you gotten yourself into now?

Eylin has her powers, and her rather cushy life, only she has had it. She is fed up with her role as a Royal Fyrsturea. She is feeling the urge to "stretch her wings" so to speak. There is a problem with that. A major, major plague is happening. It is able to kill Vampires, and other older races. It is not a game, it is life and death and what is Eylin doing? Well she is out and about getting an idea of the great wide world. That would be great, if there weren't a plague, if there weren't dangers she can't yet fathom, if massive forces were not about to see if they can bring their plans to bear. What shall we ever do about Eylin's love life complications. Oh, there is SO much I could tell you, but you just have to read this one for yourself! This series gets more and more interesting!
