About the Author
Ranjit Desai (8 April 1928 - 6 March 1992) was born in Kolhapur district, Maharashtra. Biographical novels were his forte. His most famous works are Morpankhi Sawalya, Shriman Yogi and Swami, based on the life of Madhavrao Peshwa, the third Peshwa. He won the Maharashtra Rajya Award (1963), Hari Narayan Apte Award (1963), the Sahitya Akademi Award (1964) and the Padmshri from the Government of India (1973).

Rich and Nuanced Narrative

The book is full of chronological logic and nuanced relationships of the realist oil painter Raja Ravi Verma. It portrays the painter as an amalgam of realism, nationalism, puranic wisdom and human interpretation of mysticism and life. Thankfully, the book steers clear of insinuation about the painters relationships anywhere, especially with regard to women- wife, servant, model, friends et al. If interested in modern Indian art this is where one needs to begin. There are few biographies on him (just about three). The ones that I have read confirm the fact that he was a humanist to the core even if one would have to deeply delve into his art to sustain or modify that description. The book leads to think of him, perhaps as a Rennaissance painter with a difference. He goes back to classical Indian art- especially sculpture- to do portraiture though clothes these. This is debatable. The book cannot be accused of using the word Rennaissance. A review length is not enough to talk about his contribution. Pl. Read if interested in understanding the criss cross of the then emerging Indian identity.
