Weep Not, Child (Penguin African Writers Series), by Ngugi wa Thiong'o

The Nobel Prize–nominated Kenyan writer’s powerful first novel

Two brothers, Njoroge and Kamau, stand on a garbage heap and look into their futures: Njoroge is to attend school, while Kamau will train to be a carpenter. But this is Kenya, and the times are against them: In the forests, the Mau Mau is waging war against the white government, and the two brothers and their family need to decide where their loyalties lie. For the practical Kamau, the choice is simple, but for Njoroge the scholar, the dream of progress through learning is a hard one to give up.

The first East African novel published in English, Weep Not, Child is a moving book about the effects of the infamous Mau Mau uprising on the lives of ordinary men and women, and on one family in particular.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Review
“One of the signal novels to emerge from an artist listening to both the well of tradition and the troubled oracles of his time . . . In Weep Not, Child, Ngugi’s art is at its purest. To my mind it is classic Ngugi, his Romeo and Juliet, his tale of young love set against the backdrop of opposing families and a world seething with violence and injustice.” —Ben Okri, from the Introduction

About the Author
Ngugi wa Thiong'o is an award-winning novelist, playwright, and essayist from Kenya whose novels have been translated into more than thirty languages. He lives in Irvine, California, where he is Distinguished Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Irvine.

Great literature covering pre-independence Kenya
By Deogratias Rweyemamu
This is the author's second book am reading. I had read the River Between in high school. I'm glad that on this second reading I am more appreciative of his work.

Set in the background of pre-independence Kenya, this is indeed precious literature. You're more likely to hear myths and unfounded stories than come across a book written in the 1950s and 1960s - by an African writer.

The author narrates the novel around political violence, colonialism, adolescence and an implied love story. What I found most interesting though is stories of how families participated in the rebellion against colonialism, particularly the Mau Mau uprising. History is structured in a way that shines more light on heroes such as Jomo Kenyatta, but while they gave the face to the struggle, these families did most of the groundwork. They paved the way for African independence, and their stories deserve as much attention.

I applaud the author for trying to use African language for a good part of the book. We may have a wider base of readers when African literature is written in English, but we may also end up losing many of our languages while doing so. And I doubt that some African stories, proverbs and songs have an English translation at all.

I look forward to reading more of Ngugi wa Thiong'o's books in the near future.

Straight forward- yet complex
By Ben
Like many of Wa Thiong'o's books, this novel deals with the question of Kenyan Independence and the Mau-Mau. But unlike "a grain of wheat", this conflict is not the theme of the novel, but the backdrop.

The story itself centres around a family that has lost its land to the colonial settlers, a psychological portrait of how the farmer, the soldier and the child deals with the changing world around them. Crucial to the book is the child Njoroge, a schoolboy whose thirst for education and diligent Bible study blends into an almost Messianic vision, a vision that shines the brightest when the conflict around him is at its peak. A conflict, it is revealed, he cannot escape...

It is this Icarus motif, coupled with the Romeo and Juliet-like love story that accompanies it, that reveals the complexity of the author. A post-colonial writer? By most definitions, yes. But also a man that knows the subtlety of the human soul.

Ngugi story Weep Not Child presented a story of conflict, determination and disappointment. Great story that keeps your imagination of a village in a distant land but you could see it, feel its struggles and the characters dispositions as the story was told. Great book and great author.

Insincere and Self Indulgent
By Brooklynn
If you are interested in a true account of addiction and recovery, spare yourself this self inflated
nonsense. I downloaded this book to my Kindle when it was offered for free. I would not pay for it.

This so-called "memoir" reads like a hastily written forced journal entry from someone claiming to be a recovering addict. The syntax is void of emotion, and the flat accounting of his drug fueled close calls takes up most of the pages. I suffered through the longest hour reading to the end only so I could write my honest review and hopefully spare someone who might be genuinely interested in reading a personal story about addiction and recovery.

If you have ever sat in a Twelve Step meeting you will recognize this guy. You know, the one who's eyes glaze over with euphoric recall as he tells his endless war-stories. On, and on, and on... this author rambles with poor use of descriptive language and repetitive details leaving each story bumping into the next with no insight, and self indulgent grandiosity as he relives his glory days.

I felt nothingness, empty and frustrated as the story fell completely flat and was devoid of the recognition, empathy, remorse and personal insight into the devastation the disease process of addiction causes the addict and the collateral damage inflicted on the people that get sucked into the vortex. His characters translated with stark lack of dimension as if they existed in an afterthought and were forgettable at best.

The author does not describe his recovery process, but chooses to focus on how many drinks, shots, bottles and pills led him to blacking out, over dosing or episodic self-abuse. Did he keep detailed notes?

I also find it very suspect that the five star reviews are all written with the same! exact! exclammated!! syntax! by people who were rooting!! for this guy!!

Yes, harsh; but addiction and recovery is a complex deeply personal subject, one I take seriously. If it sounds insensitive to raise and wave the B.S. flag, so be it. My B.S. triggers were tripped throughout this book and I found myself rolling my eyes through each story reminding me what a hard core bad-ass he is as he downs yet another fistfull of ecstacy or "handle" of booze.

To me, a memoir reveals feelings, insight, a path and self discovery as it tells a compelling story.

I do wish the author well in his future writing endeavors. This one fell short and missed the mark for me.

Resentment and recovery
By Theodore D Wegener
Not that well written. Starting to wonder how much understanding young Ronnie has, but I liked the beginning and the description of the hatred of his Father. Drunkalogue for the first 45 pages After about page 56 I am losing interest. Half way thru the book and it just goes on and on with drinking, drugging an fighting without much of a point or a lot of deep insight. This book seems like an exercise in therapy and not really a polished work . Frankly it is tiresome. 74 pages of drinking gets tiresome.

"much as I hate my grandfather, I would never wish death on anybody, because there is no coming back from that. I still have a deep hatred and resentment towards him, but he definitely wouldn't be worth spending the rest of my life in jail for. I've wasted enough time on him already."

I want to be kind but Ronnie is a fairly new sober person and you can see from the above quote he still has a lot to learn about recovery. I can give it 2 stars but wouldn't highly recommend it. But I wish young Ronnie well and hope he gets over these resentments.

Really good, but could use polishing
By Amazon Customer
For some reason addiction follows me. 2 ex husbands, 2 ex boyfriends, & a brother were addicts. Even tho a great part of my life was spent on the outside looking in, I have never understood it, & could not view it as an illness or disease. I read these books looking for something that will change my mind.

Although I didn't find that answer here either, it was a great read. The author didn't make excuses until his relapse, when he blamed it on boredom & the pressure of being a new dad - but in the end, those were the things that made him want to stay sober.

The book does need to be edited a bit (a few "doesn't not" & "wasn't not's" fixed to remove the double negative; some instances of extra words like "she was asleep beside me on the on the bed"), not spell checked, but READ & edited. Besides that, it's great.

Because I've been where Sarah was, she is who I related to, & I don't get the feeling the author TRULY knows how she felt (& probably still feels). I hope he realizes how lucky he is that she stuck it out. I didn't. I couldn't see it as a sickness, & therefore placed the blame on the addict. The lies & deceit were unforgivable & I never regained the trust. So, this author needs to count his blessings. I hope someday he will understand what SHE went thru, & withthat he may understand when she gets annoyed with him. Every time I tried to voice my feelings to an addict ex he made excuses or said it wasn't his fault that he was "sick."

I wish this family all the luck in the world. And to Sarah: there are people who know how difficult this journey was, and is, for you. You're a bigger woman than I am.

Your Money or Your Life: Strong Medicine for America's Health Care System, by David M. Cutler

The problems of medical care confront us daily: a bureaucracy that makes a trip to the doctor worse than a trip to the dentist, doctors who can't practice medicine the way they choose, more than 40 million people without health insurance. "Medical care is in crisis," we are repeatedly told, and so it is. Barely one in five Americans thinks the medical system works well.
Enter David M. Cutler, a Harvard economist who served on President Clinton's health care task force and later advised presidential candidate Bill Bradley. One of the nation's leading experts on the subject, Cutler argues in Your Money or Your Life that health care has in fact improved exponentially over the last fifty years, and that the successes of our system suggest ways in which we might improve care, make the system easier to deal with, and extend coverage to all Americans. Cutler applies an economic analysis to show that our spending on medicine is well worth it--and that we could do even better by spending more. Further, millions of people with easily manageable diseases, from hypertension to depression to diabetes, receive either too much or too little care because of inefficiencies in the way we reimburse care, resulting in poor health and in some cases premature death.
The key to improving the system, Cutler argues, is to change the way we organize health care. Everyone must be insured for the medical system to perform well, and payments should be based on the quality of services provided not just on the amount of cutting and poking performed.
Lively and compelling, Your Money or Your Life offers a realistic yet rigorous economic approach to reforming health care--one that promises to break through the stalemate of failed reform.

From Publishers Weekly
Not to be confused with the bestselling personal finance volume (by Joe Dominguez and Vicki Robin), this work examines the health care crisis in America. Many people readily admit they're unhappy with both the cost and the care they receive from their doctors and are very frustrated with the health-care system. However, according to Cutler, an economics professor at Harvard and health-care adviser in the Clinton administration, the advances made in health care over the past 50 years have been quite positive and have contributed to longer and more productive lives. But people have a hard time understanding their choices-paying more for medicine that will keep them alive or choosing costly surgery that may not guarantee a better quality of life. Cutler offers numerous examples of medical progress along with economic reasoning to persuade readers that more and more medical advances should be sought, along with better medical coverage for everyone. "For medical care to be effective, people must be able to afford it. The issue of affordability is clearly a concern of the uninsured. The uninsured rely on the largesse of the medical system as a whole." Cutler's discussion of managed care and how doctors are reimbursed for certain procedures but discouraged from other practices is especially clear. Cutler's position-health insurance for all and doctor reimbursement by quality, not simply service-is clear and compelling. This book will be of most interest to government officials, doctors and others in the health-care industry.

From The New England Journal of Medicine
The rising cost of health care -- and what to do about this problem -- is perhaps our nation's most pressing health policy issue. The recent spike in private-insurance premiums has alarmed both employers and employees. More telling is the lack of clear policy options designed to discourage the introduction and use of high-cost, low-benefit medical care. As if the problem were not bad enough, other research findings tell us that evidence-based medical care is dramatically underused. David Cutler makes an important contribution to our thinking on this important issue in Your Money or Your Life. The book provides a nice forum for Cutler to present much of his research that has framed how we should think about rising health care costs and whether the additional spending is worth it. Most of the popular discussion concerning rising health care spending neglects the obvious questions -- what we are buying with the additional spending and whether we are producing commensurate increases in health benefits. Cutler's conclusion is a clear "yes": the incremental health care benefits that patients receive exceed their costs. However, he provides the important caveat that we could produce the same level of health care benefits at even lower costs. The book is a good introduction to the policy debate over health care spending. It starts by appropriately framing the issue that we cannot look at the rise in spending without first measuring and comparing the benefits purchased. Chapters 3 through 5 methodically track the growth in spending to treat low-birth-weight infants, patients with depression, and those who have had heart attacks. These initial chapters contain compelling information and should be read by all who are interested in health care policy. Underlying the growth in spending is the persistent march of science. The introduction of new forms of technology allows us to treat more patients with particular medical conditions, though generally at a high price per case. The heart of the book examines these trends and, in the three case studies that it follows, compares the added spending to the change in health benefits. In each case, total spending per case has risen, driven largely by the introduction of new medical technology. In some cases, the medical returns have been impressive. In the treatment of low-birth-weight newborns, medical advances (e.g., incubator design, new drugs), although expensive, have produced a dramatic reduction in mortality rates. As discussed in chapter 3, each additional $1 spent on treating low-birth-weight babies has produced $5 of additional health benefits -- an expensive, though worthwhile, investment. Chapters 4 and 5 present the same evidence for treatment, respectively, of depression (a seven-to-one return on investment) and heart attacks (a four-to-one return on each dollar spent). Chapter 6 attempts a broader extrapolation of the medical value of health care spending -- a somewhat tougher sell. Some of the later chapters, such as chapter 8, which examines what went wrong with managed care, seem to wander slightly off target. If the health care we are purchasing is worth it, why the general malaise? Some of it is clearly traced to the perceptions of purchasers and consumers that we spend too much, that we could buy the same benefits for far less money, and that the system is hopelessly complicated. Along these lines, chapters 9 and 10 attempt to address the issue of providing better care more efficiently. One suggestion is to give physicians bonus payments for providing high-quality, evidence-based medical care. Though controversial, the idea is a good one that should be debated seriously. The final chapter wanders into the hornet's nest of universal health insurance coverage. Cutler proposes an expansion of the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program to those who want to join. This chapter is too short for such a complex topic, and it meanders slightly from the compelling story and analyses presented in the first five chapters. Who should read this book? Health policymakers and people who are troubled with the rise in health care spending and are perplexed about what to do about it. Your Money or Your Life makes an important contribution to this debate, and I highly recommend it. Kenneth E. Thorpe, Ph.D.

From Booklist
When economics and medicine mix, there is bound to be confusion unless someone like Harvard economics professor Cutler, who seems to effortlessly make a complex issue comprehensible, is doing the mixing. In this mighty volume, he constructs a compelling case for universal health care by taking readers through a number of orderly steps. In a clear expository voice he establishes the value of a human life, explains the contributing costs of health care to sustain a life, and weighs the cost of universal health care against the value received--namely, extended life and improved quality of life for all concerned. In the process, he defines how to determine whether a particular health-care option is effective and elaborates on how it ought to be compensated. Additionally, he examines various ways America's current system is, based upon his criterion for efficacy, succeeding and ways it is not. As long as providers are paid for what they perform rather than the efficacy of treatment, he says, medical costs will soar. An elegant investigation. Donna Chavez

Four and a Half Stars...
By C.N. Steele
since nothing is perfect.

Authoritative, clearly written, and quite interesting; I recommend to anyone -- professionals, academics, laypersons -- interested in these issues.

Specifics:
1) The first 5 chapters convincingly argue that the enormous increases in health care spending are first attributable to new technology and treatments, and well justified, benefits substantially exceed the costs. The arguments are based in substantial part on Cutler's own academic research. By themselves, these chapters are sufficient to justify the book. Cutler does a good job of explaining both the technical economic concepts and the medical issues, and I suspect anyone interested in the topic will find the chapters fascinating, eye-opening.

He reaches a very important conclusion: we ought to spend MORE, not less.

2) Subsequent chapters survey sources of waste and problems of distribution. I found these helpful in outlining some important problems, and well worth reading, but incomplete (see below). In part these explore the incentives created by different systems of paying for health care; this helps explain why some sorts of technologies and procedures are favored over others in any particular case.

3) The concluding chapter contains his solution to the problems, a system of universal insurance (mostly private) coverage, subsidized and supervised by the federal gov't; worth reading, but inadequate. Cutler focuses on a subset of problems & proposes a solution, with little consideration for other problems or possible solutions.

For example, he ignores 'public choice' issues: how would his proposal work in a world of self-interested government official, bureaucrats, insurers, medical professionals, patients, etc.? The system he proposes might work on paper, but is quite susceptible to "gaming." USDA crop insurance is a real world example, and its poor performance should make us hesitant to expand this approach to health care.

Similarly, Cutler argues that gov't and insurers should develop a payment system that rewards providers for measurable health improvements. Cutler greatly underestimates the difficulty. Soviet planners wrestled this problem for 75 years and were unable to solve it, how to specify a set of desired production outcomes from above and then have them realized as one envisions. It's a very difficult problem, I think unsolvable. Cutler underestimates it, and devotes essentially no attention to possible solutions which would make the individual consumer directly responsible for payment, and evaluation, of health care services.

4) Cutler provides a lengthy set of citations from the scholarly literature, excellent for further study. He also features, on his website, a technical appendix. It's clear he's trying to spread light, not heat, in the health care debate. Good on him!

5) Despite any weaknesses, Cutler does a fine job of framing the issues. The book is accessible and a good read. OK, OK, 4.9 stars.

useful book on current healthcare economics
By Soren Dayton
This book is probably an important addition to the literature on healthcare economics. It offers a good corrective to the politics out there. It reminds us that healthcare spending is not wasted spending, in the sense that it almost always adds value. It also points out that in many ways the costs of healthcare are FALLING.

The real question is how can we continue to improve the value of our healthcare dollar? Cutler concurs with many conservative healthcare analysts that the real problem is that the incentives in the American healthcare system are wrong. The incentives are aligned in favor of healthcare interventions rather than health. He proposes to address this incentive problem by having the government intervene in the market by providing the right incentives. In essence, the government would post-hoc realign the incentives by rewarding quality after-the-fact and beyond fees for services. In addition, he would subsidize insurance to create universal coverage.

This is an interesting idea. At the very least, it makes the important observations that the current system is rife with market failures due to the government-imposed structure of the market.

He does not seriously investigate other options. Both single-payer and conservative proposals are rejected with a single paragraph each. This probably misses some significant arguments from each. My sense is that he only sees one kind of market failure when there are at least two. The first problem has to do with incentives, which he sees.

The second problem has to do with information that is not efficiently used. Many of the conservative thinkers on this have argued that IT ought to provide significant cost-savings. In essence, 13% of our economy is still operating without the information processing that has revolutionalized the information economy.

compelling approach to fix the broken American health system
By A Customer
Forty million Americans lack health care insurance and costs leap three and four times the inflation rate yet few Americans feel the system provides adequate care. Harvard economics professor and health-care expert Dr. David M. Cutler believes that the problem lies with the inability for most people to understand opportunity costs based on choices that may not lead to an improved life quality. The government and medical leadership exacerbate the problem with saving money as their solution, ignoring effectiveness. He makes a strong case on how much health care has dramatically improved over the past five decades as dramatized by longer productive life spans. Dr. Cutler believes that more money should be spent on further medical advances and that universal coverage for all needs should be implemented so that the present day uninsured can afford care rather than drain at a more costly rate the system. The key is to change from a system that economically encourages doctors to choose techniques that are not always the best for the patient factoring in cost and life quality to a system that reimburses doctors for quality service (not as hard as it first sounds).
Though at times the medical supply and demand is difficult to grasp, YOUR MONEY OR YOUR LIFE makes a powerful well written argument to reengineer a system in which political band aids fail everyone. The case for quality and the explanation of choices are well done and surprisingly easy to follow while offering a seemingly radical but compellingly logical approach to fixing the broken American health system.

“WE’VE GOT YOUR SON. GIVE US ONE MILLION DOLLARS OR HE DIES!"
By Bassocantor
And so begins this surprising book. The author begins the book by relating his experience at a prestigious seminar at Harvard University. Several of the college's top negotiators put him on the spot to see how he would negotiate in a hypothetical hostage negotiation.

The author held his own against the expert negotiators, surprising the professors. How did he do so well? Mr. Voss explains that the methods used by the FBI were developed over time, "products of experiential learning; they were developed by agents in the field, negotiating through crisis and sharing stories of what succeeded and what failed." In other words, these tactics HAD to work. If hostage negotiators failed, people literally DIED.

The author discovered that the same techniques used in life and death situations could be generalized--they "made great sense intellectually, and they worked everywhere...In the twenty years I spent at the Bureau we’d designed a system that had successfully resolved almost every kidnapping we applied it to."

NEVER SPLIT THE DIFFERENCE is not just about tricky negotiation tactics, or ways to "outwit" your adversary in battle. Whether you are negotiating with kidnappers, or just negotiating a raise, the principles are the same. For example, people always want to be understood and accepted. "Remember you’re dealing with a person who wants to be appreciated and understood." This is true no matter the type of negotiation.

This also means careful listening, or what the author calls, the martial art of "Tactical Empathy." It's nearly impossible to listen to the other side; so, you have to deliberately change your focus: "Make your sole and all-encompassing focus the other person and what they have to say. In that mode of true active listening."

Each chapter in NEVER SPLIT THE DIFFERENCE begins with a real-life example from the author's involvement with hostage negotiations. Warning: Many of these cases are brutal, and oftentimes people are hurt, or even killed. After the real case is presented, the author then explains what negotiating techniques worked, and which didn't. At the end of each chapter, there is a nice wrap-up of the key lessons learned.

One of the key techniques recommended is to "Be a mirror." You simply try to reflect back what is said: "The intention behind most mirrors should be 'Please, help me understand.' Every time you mirror someone, they will reword what they’ve said. "

The book's title reflects the author's position that compromise, or "Splitting the Difference" is actually a lazy way to conclude a negotiation. It often gives bad results: "We don’t compromise because it’s right; we compromise because it is easy and because it saves face." However, a simple compromise is often "ineffective and often disastrous. At best, it satisfies neither side. And if you employ it with a counterpart who has a win-lose approach, you’re setting yourself up to be swindled."

Instead of taking the easy way, Chris recommends working relentlessly to see "what is really motivating the other side." The negotiation is not so much a battle, as a process of "Discovery." Figure out as much as you can about what the other sides really needs. Even when the other side says, "No," that's okay. Use that to clarify what the parties really want. Figure out the other side’s “religion," or what truly matters to them.

Finally, the Appendix contains detailed steps for preparing for an important negotiation. For instance, list your goals, as well as the negotiating "tools" you will be using. Chris explains that in the heat of discussion, you will otherwise forget your tactics.

All in all, I found NEVER SPLIT THE DIFFERENCE to be an impressive book, filled with practical knowledge, tips, and just plain WISDOM about how to deal with people. I like the fact that the tips and tactics are PROVEN techniques--not just some theoretical ideas.

If you've negotiated with kidnappers, I'm pretty sure that qualifies you as an experienced negotiator.

So good I'm tempted to keep it a secret and not tell anyone about it: a compendium of working Jedi mind tricks
By Dr Ali Binazir
WHY THIS BOOK MATTERS: We negotiate or persuade dozens of times a day. Then there’s the big stuff that changes the course of life: getting a raise; landing a job offer; buying a car or house. Most of us had no formal training in negotiation, or were taught incorrectly. This book is your secret weapon for mad success.
MAIN CONCEPT: Tactical empathy: “This is listening as a martial art, balancing the subtle behaviors of emotional intelligence and the assertive skills of influence, to gain access to the mind of another person.”
IS IT FUN TO READ: Finished it in a day. The book’s full of riveting life-and-death hostage negotiations, and Voss spins a damn good yarn.
OKAY, BUT IS IT USEFUL?: I highlighted 109 passages and took 20pp of single-spaced notes. There is so much crazy useful stuff in this book that it would be a bargain at 100x the price. For example, Voss advocates getting to “No” before getting to “Yes.” To those schooled in academic negotiation, this may seem heretical. But it makes all kinds of sense: letting your adversary say a solid “no” gives them a feeling of safety, security and control -- a great starting point to a negotiation. The technique of asking calibrated open-ended questions is pure gold (e.g. “How do I do that?” or “What’s important to you about that?”) Funny thing is that I’ve been teaching that technique for years, but only now understand *why* it works so well (thanks, Chris!).
Then there’s the step-by-step protocol for negotiating your salary and the 6-step Ackerman bargaining model. There’s mirroring: you repeat people’s words verbatim, so they feel understood. There’s labeling, where you identify the emotion behind what people are saying, thereby deepening empathy. Great quote: “Good negotiators, going in, know they have to be ready for possible surprises; great negotiators aim to use their skills to reveal the surprises they are certain exist.”
What I really like about this book was that its techniques were honed by real-life negotiations with actual bad guys. During his 24 years as FBI Lead Hostage Negotiator, time and time again Voss got people released from the grips of determined terrorists and kidnappers. If the techniques work in those critical situations, surely they’re good enough to help you negotiate a raise.
In the end, this is a book about not just being good at negotiation, but being great at life. “Never Split the Difference” is serious wisdom, every bit of it earned, conveyed with great humor, storytelling and insight. Read it to be a more effective human.

This is one of the two best books anyone can read on negotiation
By stedlaw
My bona fides: I have professionally negotiated for over thirty years. Do it daily. I've taken approximately 20 hours of graduate study in negotiation and conflict resolution. I occasionally lecture on the subject.

My rating: This is one of the two best books anyone can read on negotiation. The other is Cialdini's famous, "Influence: The Art and Science of Persuasion." While there are many good books on the subject, I can't think of any others that are as complete and useful as these.

Advice: Remember that negotiation is a practice. You will be best aided by these books by taking a chapter at a time and practice the ideas and techniques. Practice them on your family, on your colleagues and on your friends. (Forget pets. Dogs are too obliging and cats too indifferent.)

Review
(Review of 6/e) "Chappelle has made considerable efforts to write a book that is likely to appeal to modern students with... references to contemporary and other sources which serve to provide excellent illustrations of her points whilst indicating some of the practical applications of land law." "...it has a more modern aura... and it has the benefit of the web-based updating service that makes life so much easier for contemporary students who perhaps would not have the patience to queue in the law library clutching this week's case list." Not for Yosemite users.
By Caoimhn
I bought this book just before my Mac died. I went out and got an new computer w/ Yosemite installed. Despite a copyright date of 2015, the book was actually released in mid-2014, as I found out later. Altho' the book's intro states it was written on Maverick, it says you may use it with Maverick (10.9) or Yosemite (10.0). Well, that isn't the case; by p.17 the illustrations (which are so poorly printed, it's hard to make out detail) do not match up. Even poking around in the usually intuitive Apple Apps lead me down blind alleys (or created messes.)

I'm surprised at the positive reviews, not because of my personal experience, but of how poorly it's written. Some authors suffer from explaining their subject so many times they can get sloppy, lazy, or just take readers' knowledge of the subject for granted. Don't get me wrong—I have used Apple Pro Training Series Books w/ much success before. I guess like all things these days, updates are hard to keep up with.

Fabulous guided tour of everything you need to know to use GarageBand
By Art Shrink
OK, I have to confess that I have been intimidated for years by GarageBand. In recent months I succeeded, through the help of some YouTube videos, in making a simple two-track recording, but I was still completely intimidated and afraid to even touch most of the controls. Then I bought Mary Plummer's book. She starts by walking you through the download of all the resources you'll be working with to complete the book's projects, and continues with very detailed explanations and screen shots as you dive right into recording, editing, working with loops, patches, software instruments, midi, and so much more. No need to be intimidated, and if you do something unintended, you can always hit Command-Z! Thanks for a great book that has freed me to have fun with the amazing recording studio that has been lurking in my laptop.

I think this book is for earlier versions of GarageBand ...
By Gary B.
I think this book is for earlier versions of GarageBand that I don't have. I have 10.1. Some things that are referred to are not there. Other things that are referred to don't work. I was able to work around some things but other things I was not.
