A huge disappointment, is very outdated material.

I just took part II today! Rudman's book is not "new" in any sense. I wouldn't recommend this text to anyone, unless you plan to travel back to 1986 to take the test!

good for last minute review

If you are looking for a book to learn the material covered on part two, this is not the book. But if you are willing to memorize every exam in this book the week before you take it, this book will prove to be very helpful. The questions were very similar and some were exactly word for word (on the computer test version, I dont know about the paper test version). my suggestion would be to study the way you normally would and the week before memorize every test in this book especially the pharm, oral surgey, oral medicine section. keep in my that you want to make sure you have the latest ADA guidlines on premedication to make sure the info is updated. The book may not get you the higest possible score but it may be the diffrence between passing and failing.Basically if you are caught in a jam and did not prepare and only have a week before the test this is the book.

But the old information actually lays a good foundation for the principles of the new information. This book does help make the difference between passing and failing. It really helps with learning to eliminate the distractors even if you have no idea what the question is asking for or what the answer choices are.

War Is Chaos

It provides a decent overview of the lengthy war, including the jostling and betrayals by the Nationalists and Communists, who were fighting each other as well as the Japanese. He relied too much on "official" accounts (which are often suspect) and did no analysis, but still manages to give a feeling for the scope of the battles, some of the tragedy on the Chinese side, and the utter futility of the Japanese efforts, doomed from the start. The maps could be improved, but then I'm a map freak ;-)

Wilson's Attempt at a Comprehensive History

The long conflict between China and Japan is a very difficult subject for any history writer, so Dick Wilson deserves credit for at least giving it a try. I had a basic understanding of the war from 1937-1945, but there was much I did not know. "Tigers" does fill in some gaps, but I was still left wanting in the end. The impression I got on reading the book was that it is not comprehensive enough to encompass a conflict comparable in scale to the enormous confrontation between the USSR and Germany from 1941-1945. Nevertheless the book does provide information about the major battles during this period, and gives some flavor of the points of view of Chiang-Kai-Shek and the Kuomintang (KMT) and Mao and the Communist Chinese Party (CCP).

In Wilson's defense, some of the difficulties in writing a comprehensive history of the Sino-Japanese War must be pointed out. There are multiple sides from which any writer would have to gain source material in order to create a truly objective history: The People's Republic of China (PRC, the Mainland), the Republic of China (ROC, Taiwan), Japan, the United States, Britain, the USSR, and Germany. The real problem with source material from the first three nations present the biggest obstacles. The PRC, ROC, and Japan all have axes to grind and points of view that conflict with the others. The KMT retreated to Taiwan in 1949 after their defeat by Mao and the Communists in the aftermath of the civil war that followed Japan's surrender to the Allies in 1945. Even though the PRC has become more open since Wilson wrote "Tigers" in the 1980s, it is still controlled by the Communists, who fought an ongoing war with the KMT both before and at the same time as the conflict with Japan. It is still a repressive dictatorship and any source material obtained from the PRC must be used with that in mind. On the other hand, Taiwan has mostly been run by KMT exiles since 1949, and information gained from them must also be taken with a grain of salt. Japan has been criticized in recent years for minimizing or omitting altogether the atrocities they committed during the war. The bottom line is that Wilson did not have a full slate to work with. Any new effort at creating a narrative of this long and complex conflict would have to balance the many nations, parties, and interests involved.

The rise of the PRC as a major world power in the last few decades makes such a history essential in understanding how China, Taiwan, and Japan fit into the world order as we see it today. What is needed from the Western point of view is someone with a similar approach to David Glantz, who has made the WWII Russo-German conflict his specialty. Glantz had the good fortune of beginning his series of books soon after the fall of the USSR, which resulted in an opening up of former Soviet archives. Glantz's books have gone far to provide new insights into what happened in that war, such as "Zhukov's Greatest Defeat," his detailed tome on Operation Mars, a major defeat of Soviet forces in 1942 unknown to the West until the book was published in 2005. Any attempt at a comprehensive history of the Sino-Japanese War will require years of research, a great deal of patience, and some real diplomatic skills. Perhaps the best approach would be to follow the model Rick Atkinson used in his "Liberation Trilogy," dividing it up into three volumes. This would enable the writer to include a detailed examination of the Japanese takeover of Manchuria in 1931, which some consider the real beginning of the Sino-Japanese conflict.

The ONLY military history of the 1937-45 War

Students of Sino-Japanese History will know that very few military histories of the Sino-Japanese War of 1937-45 were ever written in English. This largely reflects the lack of interest in the West about this important theater of WW2 - which is usually passed over, with Western focus directed exclusively to Europe and the US war in the Pacific. This is a shame and a tragedy for the Sino-Japanese War was vast in scale - in terms of land areas, numbers of combatants, the numbers of civilians affected and the spill-over effects it had on other theaters of WW2. The Holocaust of European Jews is well-known, but how many in the West know about the Rape of Nanjing ? How many in the West understood the significance of China's contribution to victory in Asia ? How many in the West can say how far westward Japan's ambitions would have led if not checked in China ? Obviously, the West has much to learn about this colorful chapter in history. And Dick Wilson's book is THE place to look.
Students of Sino-Japanese history will also know Dick Wilson's book well. In 3 continents and over 10 countries, countless students, historians, doctors, scientists and casual readers I have spoken to seem to know this book well ... over 20 years after it was first published !! That's basically because Dick Wilson's book is still the ONLY popular military history of the war ever written in English. Oh sure, there are countless military histories in Chinese popular press (not Japanese because Japan officially has a 'different' view of history) and many academic texts exploring this war in English. But the latter are so scholarly and academic that they are beyond the attention span of the average reader. Dick Wilson's book is one you can pick up at anytime and have a good, satisfying read. The narrative is exciting, action-packed, full of amusing anecdotes and interesting events and yet sober and sympathetic in the right places. The author brings the charisma and quirks of the main characters in the war to vivid life. The brilliance, follies, and unique savagery of this ferociously fought war are presented with almost CNN-realism. Dick Wilson uses 1st hand witness accounts of the events of the war to captivating effect. It's as good to read as a good novel - yet you are assured through every page that the facts have been authoritatively researched. So much so that many students will find details and insights to the charcters that they probably never knew before. What a brilliant way to study this fascinating, epic war !
I first read this book in high school. It has remained on my list of 'desert island books' ever since. I was disappointed it has never been reprinted, or had a second edition. I was disappointed no other similar books have ever been written in English. In the end, I couldn't resist and book a used copy of this book. I arrived in 'well read' condition - I can understand why.

Great system,even work with my headphones

I didn't really know what to expect so when I got the Firestick it was really easy to use,Alexa is great and very dependable,Lots of features and I was even able to pair my Bluetooth headphones!I can watch tv for silent viewing at night while my wife sleeping thanks for the meidong headphones,because the fire stick has no volume control so i have to adjust the volume with my bluetooth headphones,enjoy the moment Meidong E6ANC Bluetooth Headphones Active Noise Cancelling Headphones Wireless Stereo headphones with Microphone, Ergonomic Design for Kids Adult-Black, also recommend.

The original software is still there so you can use it with your Amazon Account too. Simply follow the instructions normally to install it on your TV. I had kodi installed and can stream more content than I could ever watch. I can't compare this against the old stick but this is fast, no buffering for me. The layout on the screen is easy to use and navigate. The remote is very tactile and responsive. I love that you get the hdmi dongle as my tv has hard to access ports. I'm planning on buying another for my son's tv soon.

I found that the included power adapter isn't really necessary as long as you have a powered USB Port on your TV to plug it in to.I did notice that if you are using the 2.4GHZ wireless on your Wireless Network it does affect the speed especially if you have COMCAST/XFinity-, or other Cable provider as they are throttling the 2.4GHZ bandwidth to 25Gbps. They are doing that to pretty much force people to upgrade or update their devices to the 5GHZ bandwidth. If you don't know for sure run a SpeedTest and find out what your download speed is- upload is not at Full Duplex so it will be slower on both bands. Recommend if you have the 5GHZ band to use that band so you can use the Firestick at the optimal speed. Yes, the Firestick has 5GHZ band! Love the Firestick.

What do you need to make it work?

The Stick attaches to an HDMI port on your TV or projector. It comes pre-loaded with your Amazon account details, so the only setup you need is to plug it in and enter your WiFi password, using a simple on-screen prompt. There's no need to go hunting for obscure settings.

Power is supplied by a small USB wall adapter, but you can power it from any 1A USB socket. My TV has a USB port, but it doesn't supply enough power for the Stick.

You need a decent WiFi signal in the location you intend to use the TV. It’s essential to have a decent internet connection (I’d recommend at least 5 MB/sec), and preferably an unlimited data package (otherwise, video streaming will burn through your data allowance in no time).

A short HDMI extension cable is included, which is handy if your TV has awkwardly-positioned ports. As with the previous-gen Stick, the extension cable also seems to boost WiFi reception a bit.

The Alexa Voice Remote

Despite the new name, the Alexa Voice Remote is identical to the previous Fire TV Stick voice remote. It’s small, but fairly hefty, and is comfortable to hold. It has the usual 4-way navigation pad and media controls, but no volume buttons - you’ll need to keep your TV remote handy for that. It connects via WiFi, not infra-red, so you can safely tuck the Fire TV stick behind your wall-mounted TV and it will still work fine.
The remote’s major selling-point is the built-in mic, Unlike with the Amazon Echo.

What I once thought was silly is now a good thing!

Earlier this month, my TV entertainment included Dish 200+ channel satellite TV, 20Mbps turbo internet, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. After doing some research, I bought 3 Amazon Fire Sticks with the voice remote, cancelled Dish, upgraded to 30Mbps internet, added Sling 25 channels, added standard Hulu, and CBS All Access. Guess who still gets 96+% of the channels watched, added Prime Music and several hundred shows (that networks don't play) to all the TVs in the house, and saved over $700 per year compared to what I paid this past year? I did. I never thought of "cutting the cord" until I really looked into it all. Getting Amazon Fire Sticks are worth it and they work well....and once you get used to knowing what show plays where, it's a no-brainer. Just like how you originally had to figure out how to use a smart phone back in the day. After a while, it's a breeze. I highly recommend everything I listed in this review. Seriously....take a couple hours and make a spread-sheet listing the must-have shows that people in your household watch. Then make a comparison to what's available on the streaming services. If you're like me, and you don't watch 80% of the channels you pay for, it's so worth it.

Perhaps the best streaming device out. And Yes, you can STILL use Kodi on this device!

Now that we have that incredibly important piece of information out of the way, I will start off by saying the All-New Amazon Fire TV Stick picks off where its ever so popular predecessor left off, offering you one of the most inexpensive ways to stream HOURS of content to your TV.

The package itself includes:

- The Fire TV Stick
- The Remote control WITH Alexa voice control
- A Power adapter
- 2 AAA batteries (by Amazon basics)
- an HDMI extender if the Fire TV Stick does not fit into your TV’s HDMI port.

The device itself couldn’t be easier to use. Simply plug it into your TV, and you’re good to go! With this device, you’ll be able to use apps such as Netflix, Pandora, HBO, and even Amazon prime (provided you’re a prime member). You will of course need accounts for all of the previously mentioned apps, but if you do not, you can also use YouTube through this device, which has hours of content on it by itself! If you’re an Amazo Prime member, you will already have access to thousands of TV shows and Movies… just in case you didn’t know!

The All New Amazon Fire TV Stick features some changes that are worth mentioning, but if you’re not too tech-savy, just know that this stick performs faster than the older model. This is due to a stronger processor, a 1.3ghz quad core processor vs a 1ghz dual core processor from older models. I WAS a bit disappointed to see that the All-New Fire TV Stick did not upgrade to 2gb of Ram. While 1gb is plenty for streaming in most cases, users may find occasional lag on the home screen, especially when first booting the device up. I’ve found that if I turn on my firestick, and go do something else for a few minutes, or just allow the device some time to boot up, I do not run into this issue. While there has not been an update in ram, I have noticed that navigating the fire stick is MUCH quicker than previous models, which will make anybody happy.

Perhaps the biggest change from the previous Fire TV Stick is the remote control. While all of the buttons are the same, you now have a “Voice Control” button on top of the remote control. By pressing this button, you are allowed access to wide range of commands that take all of the grunt work out of browsing your streaming device. For instance, you can ask Alexa to “Find horror movies”, “play music from pandora”, “fast forward 5 minutes”, etc. This feature is ESPECIALLY useful given the difficulties surrounding the use of streaming devices with a remote control that doesn’t have a keyboard or mouse. It is also worth mentioning that the buttons are now made of a soft rubber material, and are easier to use.

To conclude, If you’re looking for a portable, depdnable, and easy to use streaming device, this is it. At just under $40.00, It’s hard to say no to perhaps the least expensive streaming device on the market. While I do wish that this model featured 2gb of ram for quicker browsing, 1gb is plenty for what most people will be using this device for; streaming. All in all, I would very much recommend this device!

About the Author
Allyn Washington was born and educated in Connecticut, where he also began teaching at Trinity College, his alma mater. He taught at Boise Junior College (now Boise State University) before joining the newly forming Dutchess Community College, in Poughkeepsie, New York, where he began writing "Basic Technical Mathematics," At the time, technical mathematics did not have a text that gave students the math they needed to successfully achieve their goals in the technical mathematics program. Al decided to write a book that specifically aligned itself with the technical programs these students were taking. He wanted his text to be flexible, allowing instructors to teach in ways that would most benefit their students. Through his vision and determination, Allyn Washington created the "Technical Mathematics" series. Mario F. Triola is a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Dutchess Community College, where he has taught statistics for over 30 years. Marty is the author of "Elementary Statistics, 10th Edition," "Elementary Statistics Using Excel,"" Elementary Statistics Using the TI-83 84 Plus Calculator," and he is a co-author of "Biostatistics for the Biological and Health Sciences,"" Statistical Reasoning for Everyday Life," and "Business Statistics," He has written several manuals and workbooks for technology supporting statistics education. Outside of the classroom, Marty has been a speaker at many conferences and colleges. His consulting work includes the design of casino slot machines and fishing rods, and he has worked with attorneys in determining probabilities in paternity lawsuits, identifying salary inequities based on gender, analyzing disputed election results, analyzingmedical data, and analyzing medical school surveys. Marty has testified as an expert witness in New York State Supreme Court. The Text and Academic Authors Association has awarded Mario F. Triola a "Texty" for Excellence for his work on "Elementary Statistics," Ellena Reda is the Department Head of the Mathematics, Physical and Computer Sciences Department at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, NY. She began her career at DCC in 1988 as an adjunct instructor. Ellena received her Bachelor's degree in Mathematics at Marist College, her Master's degree in Mathematics/Education from the State University of New York at New Paltz, and an advanced graduate certificate in Educational Computing from the University at Stony Brook. She is the program coordinator at DCC for the Verizon Next Step Program, has served as the program's mathematics curriculum leader, and has taught a variety of courses in this technical program. Ellena is a member of the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges. She was a writing team member of the NSF - AMATYC Math Works Project. She was the principal investigator for a National Science Foundation Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics Scholarship (CSEMS) Grant and a team leader/teacher leader for the State Professional Development Collaborative, an NSF/ATE Grant. In spring 2005 she was named a Regional Teacher of the Year by the New York State Technology Education Association. Ellena has co-authored the "Excel Manual" that accompanies "Elementary Statistics," 8th, 9th and 10th editions written by Mario Triola. In her spare time Ellena enjoys golfing, running, and reading. In 2003 she ran her first marathon to raise money for the AmericanStroke Association. Since then she has run 2 marathons and 3 half-marathons. She has three grown children and lives locally with her husband.

A much-needed biography for Mellencamp fans

It is hard to believe that this is the only biography of John "Cougar" Mellencamp written in the last 20 years. This book makes use of a previous biography, American Fool: The Roots and Improbable Rise of John Cougar Mellencamp by Martin Torgoff, but that was published in 1986, before John's most successful era with the "Scarecrow" and "Lonesome Jubilee" and "Big Daddy."

Heather Johnson's unauthorized, but nonetheless well-researched biography is based on the Torgoff book, interviews with 25 people over an eight-month period in 2006. These include band members, producers and even Elaine Mellencamp, but not John. There are 4 pages of sources, including magazine, newspaper and TV interview and even a letter Mellencamp wrote to Seymour Daily Tribune when he was in high school. But, the book lacks some credibility without having John's explicit involvement.

Positives:

Well-researched, as already noted.

The author, Heather Johnson, knows her way around the music studio, which is a credit to the book since that is where the music that Mellencamp fans is created and recorded.

Wonderfully detailed index.

Nice discography, including the unauthorized releases by the Main Man producers after John made it big.

Negatives:

-When I read "Born In A Small Town" there were times where I wondered if she has actually been to Indiana. She refers to an ancestor (Johann Herman Mollenkamp) that helped organize the White Creek Lutheran Church in Hamilton Township (Jackson County). Well, that church is in Bartholomew County (although not far away). Nitpicky, maybe, but this is a big deal to me because I grew up right in the heart of Mellencamp-land and I went to Indiana University. I learned to skate at the Rok-Sey roller rink (a Mellencamp family businesss where you could request John Cougar songs all night long.) and I can talk about all of the places in Seymour in the "Small Town" video.

-She refers to Vincennes, IN as being "nearby" to Seymour, IN (p. 5). Hardly.

-She claims John and his band performed 1,000 dates with the Kinks in 8 months in 1980 (p. 41). That would be 4 performances per day, every day. Wow. Also, highly unlikely.

-She calls Guns 'N Roses guitarist Izzy Stradlin an "Indianian". There is no such word, as any Hoosier will tell you.

At times her low-key writing style wears thin - too informal, too many repeated phrases.

Okay, despite these nitpicky negatives, I did enjoy the book. Johnson's details about the process of the creation of John's music are interesting. Mellencamp's songs are the soundtrack of my life in a lot of ways. Poorly written and researched.

This biography seems to be little more than a compilation of public information and irrelevant material. The book does not discuss any of the inspiration or meanings behind John's songs, the controversy over videos such as "Cherry Bomb", and even contains date errors in a span of just 20 pages. I ordered this book for my daughter to use for a school project and was sorely disappointed in the lack of information. I would never buy another biography by this author.

A Comprehensive Look at an Enigmatic Musician

Heather Johnson's John Mellencamp bio pulls together an impressive array of Mellencamp musicians and cohorts to paint an interesting portrait of the singer-songwriter. The people that fall in and out of Mellencamp's life at various times bring a range of perspective to the narrative, and Johnson makes sure to balance the various points-of-view.

For historical perspective, Johnson utilized a myriad of newspaper and magazine articles (all cited at the book's end). The accumulation of forgotten details will be a treasure-trove for Mellencamp fans, and a revelation to those who only know him from his big hits. In all, over 70 sources were used, and it's fascinating to contrast what writers thought of the 1981-era "John Cougar" with how they viewed the 2001 Mellencamp.

Johnson's background in audio sound engineering is put to excellent use in this book, and gives it a unique perspective few other rock books have. The author really shines when describing how Mellencamp and his producers got specific sounds. Ever wonder why Mellencamp blended huge drums with handclaps on "Jack and Diane?" Johnson goes into vivid detail about how serendipity brought that unique sound combination about -- and how that sound helped make the song a hit.

If there's any flaw, it's that it leaves you wanting more, but maybe that's the point. Mellencamp says what he has to say in his songs, and this book encourages you to listen to those songs -- which is exactly what a good rock bio should do.
