Scary, Manipulating and WOW!!!

Wow, this is one of those dark romances where you sit back and rejoice that you didn't go to these characters' school. It is as fascinating to watch as a train wreck with just the same awful outcome; messed up lives. While similar to Beautiful Disaster in messed up relationships, this one has an even harder edge to it with the intimidation, sex/alcohol and manipulation that destroys lives.

Brothers Mason and Logan are the local gods who are gorgeous, rich and their public high school's football stars. They are also a&&holes, man-whores and very scary. Samantha meets them when her mother moves them into her new boyfriend's mansion and Mason and Logan become her future step-brothers. At first they just ignore Samantha, which is fine with her, but then one of them becomes intrigued by her and she becomes powerful by association. Samantha's life has left her numb to the world and she escapes feeling anything by running for hours. Her mother cheated on her father, Sam's boyfriend cheated on her for two years with her best friend, Jessica and her other best friend, Lydia, knew about it the whole time and never told her. Now she lives with the intimidating hell-boys who throw wild parties and have casual sex with every beautiful girl from her private school.

The boys become very protective of Sam after seeing how she handles her cheating boyfriend, old friends and gossip. She just doesn't care about any of it. Mason is the quiet manipulative fighter and Logan is the slightly unstable, smooth talker who demeans others with his words and then his fists. He is a loyal follower of his brother and both are extremely dangerous. Sam finds herself unexplainably attracted to one of them and is put under his spell - literally she can't think on her own when he is around.

There is so much cheating going on in this book that I am amazed that no one got killed. Both Sam's parents and Mason's parents have cheated on each other, all the girls at Sam's school have cheated on their boyfriends there with the hot brothers and Logan's one and only love tried to cheat on him. How any of these kids will ever have a functional marriage or love life is a mystery. EVERYONE is MESSED UP in this book.

So if you like that sort of dark drama, the writing is really good and keeps the pages turning. You just can't help wanting to know what these screwed up kids will do next. There are fist fights, detailed sex, lots of drinking (teen and adult alcoholism) and dysfunction galore. In a lot of ways this reminds me of Molly Owens's book Messed Up which you HAVE to read if you like this dark type of fiction.

Innovative and AWESOME!

Don't judge a book by its cover. That was my lesson here. This was on my "Recommended" list from Amazon, since I love YA romances. I thought the cover was okay, and the title was a simplistic. But, I was slightly intrigued by the synopsis, and hell, it was only $.99, so I bought it. I wasn't expecting any depth. Boy, was I wrong!

This story is very edgy. There were times when I wasn't sure if I liked what was happening, but I couldn't put it down. The characters have so much back story and their own individual struggles, that I wondered how the author did such a good job having so much going on without detracting from the romance. This book is not convential. And I use the word "romance" lightly. The characters don't seem to have much sentiment going on between them for a long time. Heck, it takes them like 10 chapters before they even speak to eachother! The romance unfolds slowly, but the lust was always there.

I felt weird about the heavy drinking, the promisuous sex, the criminal activity, and the sex before love going on, but what makes this a great read is that I want to read it all the time, and I think about it when I'm not reading it.

I don't know what the author has planned for the sequel, but so far they've released the first three chapters online for free. If you Google "Fallen Crest Public", you can read the chapters on [...]. But I would just google it, so you get a direct link.

Guilty Pleasure Read

Holly Hell! Why did I not know about this book until this year...Fallen Crest High was just so damn good. There was so much unbelievably messed up and just downright screwed up s***happening which might normally make me dnf a book but call it a guilty pleasure read because I couldn't get enough of it. I loved Mason, Samantha and Logan.

From the way the blurb is set up I thought it was going to be some love triangle between the brothers and Samantha but that wasn't the case so don't let that stop you from reading it. Mason was so intense and a total alpha male for all you romance readers you know the type...in other words he was as swoon worthy as they get. Samantha....Sam is pretty awesome too. She isn't the easiest person to get along with but with a bitch of a mother like hers I don't blame her and I actually loved her. She has a lot of crap going on in her life, even her friends are pieces of s***and Mason was just what she needed. Now moving on to Logan, he is such an ass but somehow I found myself really liking him....(like I said guilty pleasure read) but he had a couple of good qualities too when you dig deep way deep in there somewhere. I need to see if there is a book about him.

The funny thing is it's not just the main MC's who have serious issues, the parents and just the adults in general are all so very messed up.

I literally read Fallen Crest High in one sitting I lost a crap load of sleep over it and I don't regret it one bit. This was my first Tijan read and after this I went ahead and added everything else she ever wrote to my tbr pile.

Overall I loved it, very fast paced and I'll be grabbing the second book asap.

A most enjoyable read. I can see why it won awards. You slip rignt into the heroine's shoes for the whole book. She's non-traditional--a vet and motorcycle enthusiast. I had to look on Danelli on the web to see if the company really existed; it was so believable and beautifully done.

This is the most colorful and entertaining history of Hong Kong action cinema available. Bey Logan traces the genre from its genesis in the late 1940s until the 1990s, enhancing his story with biographies, select filmographies, and 10-best lists. Though Logan focuses on superstars such as Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and John Woo, he also takes time to describe how Hong Kong action cinema blends with other genres. He devotes chapters of his book to Hong Kong comedy, horror, and fantasy as well as to the series of action films that feature female protagonists. Logan concludes the book by looking toward the future of this cinema and the "New Dragons Rising" who could be its next stars.

Followers of Hong Kong films know what action really is. The balletic, often violent, frequently absurd but always imaginative and entertaining cinematic output of that tiny island is leaping and chopping its way into the West, and Logan's book does an excellent job of clueing new followers into what's what and who's who in the Hong Kong action scene. Many of the top chop-socky stars, such as Jackie Chan, come from the rigorous classical training of Peking Opera, where actors are required not only to sing but also to tumble, dance and fight with traditional weapons. Logan shows how the popular story of 19th-century martial-arts hero Wong Fei Hung was blended with equally popular Peking Opera action to launch a new movie style in the late 1940s and how that style has exploded since then. Although most of the Hong King films shown in the U.S. are police action flicks, some of the nuttiest are the ghost stories and fantastical-historical reenactments of events from the semi-legendary past, many of which are given their due here. Author Bey (who has appeared in a number of Hong Kong films and is the editor of Combat magazine) covers the leading actors, the fighting females (who are rarely just romantic interests) and the transition that directors such as John Woo and Tsui Hark are making to Western studios?where many of the stunts copied from their films preceded them. For the reader just discovering Hong Kong cinema, this book is an excellent guide. For the old hand, it offers juicy tidbits on the past and present of this exciting and increasingly popular genre.

A Good Base Line Reference for HK Cinema

Nice overview. Well written and well researched. Great section on Liu Chia Liang! Not in depth and not meant to be. It covers all the basics and leaves you wanting to know more. If you are unfamiliar with the world of Hong Kong Cinema, you couldn't go wrong renting any of the films discussed in this book. I like it alot.

Timeless Reference Book

I've had this book since it came out in 1996, and I STILL go back to it a lot. It's a fantastic overview of HK action movies, and it covers the early origins of HK cinema, 60's movies, Bruce Lee, Shaw Brothers, Golden Harvest, Jackie and Sammo, Horror, fighting women, new wave wuxia, gunplay movies, etc., and it goes right up to about 1995. There's lots of various "top 10" lists of movies and fight scenes, and it gives a smattering of the historical context of some of these films and their subject matter. Since this book was published, we've seen the advent of DVD, and a greatly increased availability of these films. When this book came out, it was almost impossible to find decent quality versions of many Shaw Brothers films, but since the Celestial remastering in the early 2000's, there are now literally hundreds of Shaw movies available in pristine widescreen prints with original language. Similarly, there are many more Golden Harvest movies, and independents available as well. Given the luxury of choices we have now, Logan's book may not seem too in-depth; it's not, and it wasn't meant to be. But still (pun intended), this book really puts the whole HK movie tradition in perspective, and gives you the context for appreciating many of the films that are out now. I've found it very useful when I want to explore a subgenre that I wasn't too familiar with, like Hong Kong horror: this book gives you a nice background, as well as a listing of the classics of the genre for you to seek out. In a nutshell, this book doesn't cover slightly more obscure movies, themes or actors, but if you're looking for a solid baseline reference that covers the most important and influential movies, stars, directors and trends of HK action cinema, this is a valuable addition to your library.

Realizing (again) that i don't have to settle for american crud, i dug this book out and marveled again. Color, b/w photos, comprehensive listings (to '95), good taste, smooth and infectiously enthusiastic writing - A+!

About the Author
Robert N. Lussier is Professor of Management at Springfield College. Having taught management for more than 25 years, he has developed innovative and widely copied methods for applying concepts and developing skills that can be used personally and professionally. A prolific writer, Dr. Lussier has more than 350 publications to his credit, including other best selling textbooks (such as Management Fundaments: Concepts, Applications, Skill Development, also by South-Western/Cengage) and articles published in Academy of Entrepreneurship Journal, Business Horizons, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Journal of Management Education, Journal of Small Business Management, Family Business Review, and Journal of Small Business Strategy and many others. He served as founding director of Israel Programs and taught courses in Israel. His international experience also stretches to Namibia and South Africa. He holds a bachelor of science in business administration from Salem State College, master's degrees in education and business administration from Suffolk University, and a doctorate in management from the University of New Haven.

Christopher F. Achua is a full professor in the Department of Business and Economics at the University of Virginia's College at Wise. Dr. Achua has been teaching strategic management, leadership and other related courses for almost two decades, and he has an active scholarship record of presenting papers at regional and national conferences. A consultant to a variety of for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, Achua has served on several boards. He served as founding director of two business programs at UVA-Wise - the Small Business Institute (SBI) and the Center for Entrepreneurship, Leadership & Service (CELS). He received his undergraduate degree in business administration and accounting from the University of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; his MBA from the University of South Dakota; and his doctorate from the United States International University in San Diego, California.

Needs Work

I have not been impressed with this textbook. For the price of the book I expected a very professional and well edited and researched text but this has not been the case. I have noticed several typos and grammatical errors throughout. Plus, one of the areas in the book that referenced a research paper got the results of the paper backwards, thus confusing the reader on an aspect of behavioral leadership theory. Other areas discussing leadership theories appear to be based more on the opinion of the authors than on the body of research. Furthermore, their opinions do not appear to be generated from real world application, but instead from conceptualized and second hand accounts.

I had to buy this overpriced book because it was a required text. To learn about leadership I would choose some other book. Definitely not worth what I paid for it.

glimpse life during Charlemagne's rule

I read this 78 page book in two quick sittings before allowing my son to read it himself when we study the Middle Ages in our home school next year. The story tells of a fictional 12-year-old page who lives during the reign of Charlemagne. The short text is very accessible for children 8 and older to read to themselves, and would otherwise make a fine read aloud. The story, though fictionalized, gives real detail about life, clothing, entertainment, and occupation during the Frankish kingdom. Seeing daily life through the eyes of young Rainolf brings the time period to life in a way that a textbook simply couldn't do. The tale is told in high quality prose, though is, admittedly, not over-the-top exciting. You or your child will come away from it having a better sense of what daily life consisted of for the Franks and be lightly entertained along the way. Enjoy!

'Lost Little Rock" lost it's credibility as an accurate source for history, but makes a nice photo album.

Do NOT buy it for accuracy. Buy it for the photos of old Little Rock before downtown became a GIGANTIC parking arena. Errors and confusion in the text unnecessarily keep this from being the book it should have been. If you want to read it as a story based on partial fact it is that. However, having lived there, the outright errors and confusion make it unreliable to quote as historical fact. Someone else should have proofread for accuracy before publication...or left it solely as a photograph album.

Wonderful Memories!

I found this book at the library and decided to purchase a copy for myself and another copy as a gift. I've lived in central Arkansas my entire life and have wonderful memories of Little Rock in the 60's and early 70's. The pictures are wonderful, and I'll never again have to try to remember which was at 4th & Main and which was at 5th & Main -- Woolworth's or Walgreen's. I did note two minor errors. Worthen Bank was on the southeast corner of 4th & Main, not the northeast corner as stated on page 24. Also, Woolworth's was on the southwest corner of that same intersection, not the northwest corner as stated on page 29. I should know because I spent a LOT of time waiting on a bus at 4th & Main. I grew up in North Little Rock. When I was a child -- 12 - 15 years old -- my mother would give me $1 on Saturday. I could ride the bus to Little Rock, buy a ticket to a movie, buy popcorn & a Coke, and catch the bus back home. I can still hear my mother say, "Jane Ellen, don't you forget that the last bus leaves 4th & Main at 8:45 and you'd better be on it!" A 12 year old girl standing on a street corner in Little Rock waiting on a bus at 8:45 at night today would be unheard of. I didn't see any mention of the Arkansas Theater on Louisiana. That place was incredible! The Center Theater was more modern, but the Arkansas was beautiful. I also saw movies at the Capitol Theater and the Heights. This is a really nice book and brought back lots of memories!
