Scott M. Rodell provides an excellent translation of the Shi Jian Pu, and while the main focus of the book seems to be for those who currently practice with the Jian (the Chinese straight sword), Scott’s translation provides much for those who practice other arts to feed from. �Unlike many modern Martial Arts books on the market, this particular one remains true to form, much like how the originals would have been. The Inclusion of the forms historical context is great to have in the book as it allows us to better grasp the intent and function of the Jian. Scott’s many years of experience with Chinese Martial Arts is evident from the get go, as the translations are clear, precise, and aid in the overall understanding of the form. Overall I would very much recommend this book as a supplement to anyone not only practicing with the Chinese Jian, but also for those who practice other martial arts forms. This is an excellent update to a classic text that we would not normally be able to obtain. Thank you for this translation Scott; it is and will always be an absolute pleasure to read.�

A good companion to Chinese Swordsmanship

A good companion to Chinese Swordsmanship: The Yang Family Taiji Jian Tradition, by the same author. It's a relatively short book, and not really intended for beginners, but rather people who are already practicing Chinese swordsmanship, as a different perspective. It's quite interesting to see the meanings that are contained in very condensed text in the original Chinese. A good book for people interested in historical swordsmanship.

As mentioned in the foreword,it is a rare occasion when a true manuscript on Chinese historic swordsmanship is found. Even less so, one reaches the international audience. For that alone we should be grateful for this book and to the author of the translation.
As for the book itself, it is clearly not the "Chinese Swordsmanship For Dummies". At times it is as cryptic and poetic as any Chinese classical text. It is a testament to the skill and experience of the author of the translation in the art of Chinese swords and swordsmanship, that the commentary provided by him cuts through often obscure references to historic and poetic sources, revealing practical and useful catalogue of basic cuts and strategies.
Not a book for casual reader. Insight and experience in Chinese swordsmanship is a must.

Very short but charming classic sword manual. If you are familiar with jian technique already you may find some very interesting insight. If you are looking for more detailed instruction to get you started I might be inclined to look to the more modern books by Yang, Jwing Ming, Scott M. Rodell, or Stuart Alve Olson.
