Un giorno comunic� a Nelly di averla scelta come protettrice. Aveva dieci anni, un bambino goffo, tarchiato, pesante. L'espressione dei suoi occhi marroni – occhi di cane – agli altri bambini e agli adulti faceva venire voglia di tormentarlo. Le sue lettere (le pi� antiche che conservi). Ora non c'� pi� nessuno a cui posso lavare le posate, le scrive dopo che � stata dimessa. L'ortografia delle lettere mostra che i tentativi di Nelly di insegnargli a leggere, scrivere e far di conto erano miseramente falliti. un piccolo tesoro

Un romanzo breve ma intenso, commovente soprattutto nella consapevolezza che si tratti dell’ultimo scritto di C.Wolf. La combattiva scrittrice si addolcisce nel narrare, nel suo stile inconfondibile in cui presente e passato s’intrecciano, i pensieri di August, un anziano autista di autobus. In una placida notte, mentre conduce a destinazione il suo autobus di gitanti, August ricorda sprazzi degli anni passati in sanatorio quando era bambino. Ricorda la durezza delle condizioni di vita e la presenza continua e fredda della morte, ricorda anche, per�, con grande lucidit� e amore la figura di Lilo, l’angelo custode dei piccoli malati. I ricordi sono intrisi della malinconia tipica della vecchiaia, quando solo alcuni momenti, i pi� importanti, ritornano vividi, incuranti del tempo.
